Has anyone had any experience with these speakers from VDP? I've seen threads on Sound Bars, but those seem to be made specifically for heeps. I'm wondering if these might not provide a little more flexibility in placement and work nicely in my '74 FJ. Thoughts???

I'm glad you started this thread cause I've been looking at similar things and wondered what other folks have used. I was interested in a setup like this:

But that definitely seems more Jeep-tuned....any ideas?

Yes, ideas please, I need some tunes!

"IMOP" having the speakers right over your head will greatly add to the highs of the music you choose to listen to, and make it sound like its coming from a tin can. A good set of 6x9's or so behind you with an amp will be more listener enjoyable. If your into the 80's style loud guitar metal bands, then placing the spekers as close to your head as possible is the way to go. I am currently in the process of putting pioneer TRX-50 behind the front seats of my 40, so at least ALL the music can be enjoyed, not just the highs.....IMOP.

I agree with your thoughts on sound quality and would prefer to have a good set of 6x9's boxed behind the driver seat. But my problem is placement because I have a bench (for my kids) and I think they'd get beat to heck with my twirps climbing in and out of the rig. They have little enough area to step without hitting the heater as it is!

There's a little space (maybe 8") between the bench and tailgate. I might be able to put subs in the back if I can find something thin enough and customize boxes. That might help with the lows and sound quality--at least for my kids in the back!

you can made a small plate or buy it, for 6.5 speakers behind the kick panel,if you have a bench seat also can use some ideas, i have 2 6.5 bazzoka sub woofers and a small amplifier that i can take it out in minutes when we have a mud trip to the forest..for the beach and DD i keep the sub in.

Don't buy the top mount speaker boxes---My buddy has them they look nice, but they sound terrible. I get better sound out of my system: 6x9 in a standard speaker boxes mounted with industrial velcro on the wheel wells. I also have a 10" sub with Pioneer front tweaters. The music is very well balanced. See pics below.

Sweet set-up.. I've seen and admired it before. I was also thinking of the bazooka tube subs. They even make one that looks like a NOS tank.

How wide is that bench? It seems to fit perfectly within the wheel wells. I have a Bestop rear bench, that has about a 1.5-2 inch gap on either side and is a bit narrow to fit 3 kids. I was thinking of getting rid of these sweet speaker boxes and putting a wider custom bench that would extend over the wheel wells. Any thoughts? But then, what would I do for speakers? I've heard of small bullet speakers that work well on boats, but the ones I found were hella expensive!

Here's a peek at my rear bench width..

I got a pioneer MARINE CD/AM/FM (from the boating section of Cabella's; I'm sure that they're also at Bass Pro shop, etc), and got some surface mount 5" Marine speakers for the front (may go to floor, dash, can be taken apart from the mounts for mounting behind a different grill). Getting a MARINE amp (again, from boating supply source), and got Bose 151's for the rear (yeah, maybe should'a got 161's).

Designing a tread-brite / expanded steel outer-box for the Boses, and will mount them at one of the junctions of the roll bar (Less wattage in the 151 than the 161, but, will make up for it in size & placement location). The Mount will allow the speakers to be rotated out / rear (for tunes outside the vehicle while relaxing), but still protect against theft. (No, no pic's yet) The point to the whole design is: waterproof, with sound quality.

For those that don't know - the Bose 151 & 161 are both waterproof (they display them in a huge fish tank at the stores, and you CAN hear the music from them through the water and tank wall (barely)). They HAVE been available through Sams club / Costco, but, the reality of Bose is, no matter where you get them (including outlet stores), the price may go up, but, it don't go down.

BTW - whenever I've googled "Review (Maker name) Soundbar" ... most of the soundbars have recieved HORRIBLE reviews. They may be improving since I stopped looking, but, Ias much as I liked the idea of the soundbar, they got too many bad reviews. That said, I DID see one that you put your own speakers into (by a reputable 4WD parts company), so, that might actually be good. The complaints were on both, the quality / longevity of the speakers and the operation of the lights.

I built my own speaker bar for my buddies jeep and it worked out quite well.

I have put a pair of Amp enhanced 6x9s in boxes just behind the rear seats in two separate Cruisers with good success but I am always looking for better options. At one time I temporarily put a set of speakers over my head and it sounded even better. I would also like to see what someone did with the heep factory speakers installed ina cruiser. How did they attached them to a Toyota roll bar or aftermarket cage. I have read the past posts and searched but have never seen the stock heep setup installed.
I am thinking of installing tweeters near the dash and bigger speakers near the kick panel. I think that would sound great. Maybe a sub under the seat. I'm sure these will all help my off road capability by keeping me happy.
