I am doing a tbi conversion on a 9/77 fj40, so I had to buy a large cap distributor. It came in the mail today so how do I install it? I'm just not sure of the proper oreintation.

Please post up a picture of what you received.

The following is not my thread, but I used it and it should answer your question...wish I could find who submitted this...thanks!

Static time it with the engine off first:

Put the engine at 7 degrees BTDC for cylinder #1 by manually turning the engine until the pointer is at the BB and the rotor is pointing to the spark plug wire for #1 (and not #6)
Then retard the distributor 20-30 degrees, put a test light or volt meter on the distributor wire (or coil - lug, same thing), then turn the distributor CCW until the light goes on or voltage jumps up.

This will be close enough for it to start and run. Then you can adjust it while it is running.

That works great.

With a points ignition.

Set it to 7*, then install dissy so signal rotor is right at pickup tooth.

here are some pictures of the old(left) and new (right) distributors;

Another problem that I have run into the new distributor shaft is .5 inches shorter than the old shaft (and I'm guessing that size matters here:)), so I removed the bracket from the enginge to allow the new distributor to drop into the oil pump slot. more pics;

But now I cannot secure the distributor or rotate it because of the engine access panel;

I have heard that you can hit this panel with a hammer to allow access for the larger distributor, but I am not real crazy about the idea of beating on an engine panel without knowing what is behind the panel or how much clearance there is.
