What'd you need to install wiring harness besides the kit?

I've ordered the Highway 15 kit from american autowire after seeing good reviews of it on here for it's step by step instructions and appearance.

What did you need to buy to properly install your own? Ratcheting crimper? Some kind of wire stripper they use on the Space Shuttle? Loom made from the finest from Kazakhstan?

I've been eyeballing these things on Amazon.

And have seen weatherpack kits on ebayfor about $80 bucks. But I don't know whether the weatherpack connectors will be worth the money.

I've got a SBC and am currently reading up on installing a GM column. However I've seen that people having made the toyota one work and I'll probably try to do the same. Especially since there is no pick-and-pull anywhere around me.

Thanks

Most of these generic harnesses are made for GM type vehicles, so some of the circuits are incompatible with the wiring on '74 and later cruisers. If you only want to replace the fuse block wires, then it won't be much of an issue. If you want to replace all the wiring, then you are going to have to fabricate some of the harness yourself, which defeats the purpose of buying one. You might as well make the whole harness.

Okay. Well I've bought this one and am installing it. I'm already aware about the differences between GM and Toyota which I alluded to when I mentioned possibly installing a GM column.

Someone has already messed with the wiring in the past and it's nothing like the factory job. It's a mess with melted wires and wires that just stop in the middle of no where.

Care to recommend a crimper or your favorite connector by chance?

Like this guys. But worse.

I bought the EZ Harness. Nowhere close to installing it yet. Later on, I also ended up purchasing 2 other harnesses from members here on Mud for the connectors. Not sure what avenue I'll be heading up yet. Might just rebuild one of the used ones I purchased with wire from the EZ. I also bought a variety of loom and grommets from Waytek and Packard WeatherPac terminals from another source. All this, and the tub is still on the ground.

Good luck on your quest for info!

I installed a Painless on mine. Basically, you need a wiring schematic, some spools of various gauges (12, 14, 16), a simple crimping tool, and a bunch of connectors from your local auto parts store. Some fabrication required regardless of which one you get.

I used the Highway 21 on my latest project. The tool question is addressed on this post:

It was a seamless install, but I used a Flaming River column. After going over the wiring diagram on the column, I'm glad I did.:D

Thanks, I guess I had seen that mentioned on their site somewhere (buried). And your post hadn't turned up on any of my searches.

So both of those tools are required to make the crimp or is one of them a standard crimper?

Hmm, we just hired an out of work electrician for our cafe. Maybe he'd have one?

Both tools will make most all of the crimps needed to complete the harness. Additionally, I used a regular spade lug crimper for some additional work.

The crimpers may be able to be purchased for less money, but I didn't have the time or ability to do the research. These are the style crimps they make (in 4 distinct sizes).

Weatherpack is the bomb. Period. Someday, I will do a Painless and weatherpack it all, and have it done by my mechanic.

Sounds funny but check your local Home Depot's electrical tool section. They have a couple of speciality crimpers there along with work saving "Stripmaster" by Ideal. The strip master is the bomb for stripping wire. Klein Tools should also have the crimper youre looking for as well.

If Home Depot doesn't have it, check with your loca electrical supply house. They should have a decent crimper for your needs there.

I used the Painless harness and got everything else I needed at the local hardware and autoparts stores

the most difficult is the blinker/hazard/brake light dealio

ah yes, and I used the weatherproof crimp connectors and heat shrink tubing - whatever intact Toyota plugs I found, I left there and connected after the plug/switch; some plugs were broken beyond repair

would yall recommend using the stock harness if i still have it or buying a new one? i was wanting a new one just so i know i won't have any problems but if my stock one is fine is it really worth upgrading to a newer one?

If the stock harness is in good shape and you aren't adding a fuel injected V8 with AC, stay with what you have.

Cirbo,

What if i just skip the AC? :bounce:
