Any tips on removing TRE's? Of course mine are severly rusted & since I am raplacing the TRE's & I could not get the retaining nuts off, I cut the nut and stud off. I have 1 remining that I cant break loose. I have tried a puller, heat, lube, BFH, and I can not break this one loose. I am about ready to just pull off the steering arm and drill the SOB!:bang:

Get a decent 2-finger puller(with fixed fingers, not adjustable) and put some tension on it, then bang the female portion and it should pop out. The pickle fork also works.

Hey Matt,

Did you try heat in the form of an oxy/acet torch or propane? I've tried propane and wouldn't budge then put the real heat to it and things seem to come right apart. Get it red hot and as it cools spray it with PB blaster (not while it is still red hot). You might need to pull the steering arm and beat it out with a BFH and a punch over a vice or anvil.

I would try this before drilling but if it still won't come out you might have to drill it.

Yeah, vatozone will loan you a pickle fork as will alot of other auto parts stores. On my TRE's it took just a couple swats with a BFE and they popped right out. You can't be afraid to smack the crap out of it tho.

FYI, Maybe you know this, maybe you don't. Don't smack the TRE, Smack the female part the TRE goes into.

The one on the steering unit is still stuck in mine i just un screwed it and bought new. But the right side was easy once i bought a fork.

too many BFH's on this thread, get a tie rod remover tool

I don't like the idea of BFHing on my sterring components:meh:

Sounds like I might have to buy a pickle fork tonight...haha. I cant remember if I smacked the female part or not. I am going to have to try that as well. I know, I concentrated mainly on hitting the TRE itself, but I know I was off target a few times too!

So................I think you should smack the :princess: portion:rolleyes:

Innuendo aside, a pickle fork has its place but mostly on ball joints. They tend to bang up and score steering components. I used a 2 1/2 ton, three prong puller from Autozone and proceeded to break a prong off. I then shelled out for a 7 ton, three prong puller from Snap-On and have never had a problem since. No BFH needed and if you ever need to reuse tie rods it's gentle as can be.

Well, it is a friction/interference fit/Morse taper, which is a pretty stout joint, but any rust or corrosion makes it that much more difficult to separate. Banging on the FEMALE PART helps to loosen it so that the puller can do it's thing. I did not use a BFH, just a pick hammer and did not have to beat it to death. I think all it does is knock the FEMALE PART out of round for a split second and helps to release the friction. When you beat on the threaded end of the TRE, you are working against all the friction the joint has to offer....

I am no engineer, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night and I have removed TRE's from my '66 using that method.;)
