I've replaced my MC and am pretty sure I now need a new booster. I'm looking for direct fit as possible without being the original one. A buddy of mine has a couple Supra boosters from 82-85 and all the same. Yes I have searched but was wondering should one of these be pretty close to the factory one on a 78?? Any help would be great. Thanks, Wes

85roktoy.........am thinking about the same........replacing a single circuit 69 master with a boosted dual circuit master, clearence is an issue..used supra booster seem to be more plentiful........bump for help;

Lou

You got the best situation going....get the MC's and hold them up to your 78 and compare. Measure the differences and you tell us. This topic comes up often and to my recollection, never been answered directly. Anything can be made to fit and most Toy stuff interchanges be it a Supra, Minitruck, 40/50/60/80-series or Celica.

Here's my old dual diaphram 75 booster next to a booster from a '94 Lexus 470 (80-series). From the physical differences one may seriously doubt one could replace the other. Anything can be made to fit. This was a one bannana job.

more pics all posted b4.

As long as the MC can physically bolt to the booster and the booster can physically mount to the firewall, everything else is trivial.

:clap:dgangle...for a very nice install; am thinking that 78roktoy has the same setup as I have, a 78/79 2F with the same brake booster+master and clutch master + same needs.
other toyota brake systems <supras,celicas...etc> are plentiful in wrecking yards compared to LCs:frown:
noticed you have a SBC install and I am thinking that the 75 dual diaphragm is the one on the left in your pix and the lexus one is the installed one..........just hate to assume anything as when I do I tend to screw things up:frown:.noticed your clearence is very tight against your clutch MC;
any idea of the diameter of your booster?, did you have to modify your brake rod? TIA

Lou

P.S. think I have seen your fj40 southside Birmingham......that yellow is awesome:)

Thanks. That's prolly either me or Badass. His is mustard, mine 2000 Chebby Millennium yellow and we live not too far from one another. wave me down next time and we'll talk Crusiers!

For clarification, the dual diaphragm was before, the LX470 & Marlin 4WDB MC later. Not sure on the diameter but I did use ~3/16-1/8" spacer between the booster and firewall. I used the DD MC 'clevis' on the LX MC and had to shorten the brake rod as I remember. . Clearance of the clutch MC was a non-issue. The brake line for the rear circuit took some rebending though.

dgangle,

Hate to hijack the thread but I have the large dual diaphram booster same as you had and just got a smaller one from and fj62 that looks like the one from the Lexus you got. I have been holding off doing the switch thinking the smaller one would not work as well as the larger. Do they both work the same and is the pedal action going to be the same? I would much rather have the little one in than the huge 75one. Does the rod need to be altered or anything else or is it a simple bolt on deal? Thanks very much in advance.

the booster-rod should always be verified when a replacement booster is installed...always.
lots-o-info on this :)

I found the larger booster from the Lexus LX470 (80-series) to provide more braking power with less peddle pressure. I was not 100% sure of the condition of the dual diaphram I took off however. With the Marlin Crawler MC for 4wheel disk brakes the combo works very well. That being said, I still have difficulty at times adjusting the front/rear bias when the truck is very light (without the hardtop, etc) even with an adjustable proprtioning valve. When the top is on I can adjust it to brake bias front/rear much better...I have just had to learn to live with it.

Yes the rod needed to be adjusted...I had to shorten the rod (between booster and pedal) from the Lexus around 1/4" plus space it away from the firewall as previously mentioned. I had to also adjust the pushrod clearance between the MC and new booster but the booster has this adjustment with a locknut. Nothing ever just bolts right on.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm basically looking for something closest to the same size as the original because I don't want to have to bend new hard lines. I'll look around

I ran an 85 supra booster in my 72 FJ40 when I had it. It fit fine, I just had to kind of squeeze it it because I didn't disconnect the master when I installed the new brake booster. It worked just fine. Sorry I don't have any pics.

85roktoy...did you find a booster that meets your needs for at '78? One to bolt on without having to bend any lines? I'm in the same boat as you. Gonna try the junk yard tomorrow to see what I can find. Let me/us know if you did find one. The older Fj's have the skinny booster and it seems like they're easier to install w/out bending lines. The later and fatter boosters....that I'm not sure about.

Hmmmm.....

Hey Dave. I have not found one yet but the fella above said one from an 85 supra will work. My brakes have been working pretty good so I sort of forgot about it.

Another guy told me that a booster/master combo from a 90 4Runner worked really well. He didn't say if he had to re-do the hard lines though. Thats my main concern. I just don't wanna have to bend any new lines. If you go tomorrow look at all the toyota pickups and 4Runners. Let me know what you find.

85roktoy... I went ahead and started a new thread regarding the fat booster o' '78 in case anyone else ever searches for the info. If you have any questions...let me know.
