I recently ran across this distributor on Ebay. I am wondering if any Mudders have purchased one with success and what their impression is.

I am also curious what other after-market distributors folks are running on a stock 2F non-electronic ignition or if most find the stock OEM dizzy is satisfactory or if I am going to drop this kind of coin - go ahead and go electronic (and yes, I see the electronic ignition stuff in the FAQ)

The 2f I am currently installing is a rebuilt '79 motor with about 6000 miles on it.

i've got a non-smog 79model vaccum advance. i was told it's a desirable dizzy, but i don't know. came from saudi arabia attached to my cruiser. my 2f screams even though it's pulling a big ass wagon(troopy).

I ran a Mallory when I first bought the Cruiser. I still have it, and it's for sale cheap. It is basically new if you are interested. It worked fine.

The best distributor will be an FJ60 distributor and coil/ignitor and you get to stay all stock for reliability. It's fully electronic, waterproof, vented, vacuum advance etc.

You will not see dramatic performance gains from a distributor if that's your goal.

i pulled a GM HEI dizzy out of a 68 nova w/ a 250 I6 and switched out the standard gear for the metric one on the toyota dizzy i was taking out of my 2F.

love it, loved doing the conversion (one of the first "things" i did to my cruiser), plus when you switch distributors you inevitably dial in your timing so hopefully you'll see a bit better gas mileage as well.

there is a write up somewhere in the tech links or FAQ that i used as a basis for my conversion w/ a few differences here and there.

i know this isn't the "toyota" way to do it, but it cost me 60 bucks total and a few hours of work.

81+ fj40/60 dizzy and coil/ingitor.......great set up, no desire for anything else

I just recieved mine from HEIDIZZY today,I'm still a little confused on where the plug wires go,so I'm waiting on a friend to help me Fri. I can tell you I ordered it late Friday afternoon and it was shipped Mon. morning and at my door today,(FAST SERVICE). I'm not sure how it will run yet,but I can tell ya it's sure pretty. I'll keep you posted. Thanks Bill

I am running a Non-USA vacuum advance distributor.
With points even!!!!!

I have removed the ballast resistor and ignitor. But there is a condensor in the dizzy. Never had a problem with burned points.

Thanks for the input. I have been leaning toward the FJ60 Electronic change over as I have heard good things about the reliability and ease of change over (and have seen the FAQ on it). Obviously reliability and EZ compatibility is important. Although I like the idea of having something custom that could give me some improvement in mileage, it is not the foremost in my mind.

Davis - I will be looking forward to hearing back once you get yours dialed in.

I'm currently running an HEI that triggers an msd 6A directly = no internal hei module.
Other then ignition curve, really pleased w/HEI MSD combo.

That being said, I recently acquired an 81 toyota dizzy, ignitor...and am interested in giving a try.

I believe I can wire it to trigger the MSD = no toyota ignitor (and possibly pulling other electronics under the cap - if any).

anyone else doing this?

HEI style DUI brand name, came with the truck in a box of parts, like the rest of the truck!!!

2f non vac advance JDM points dizzy with a petronix.

Finally a no headache dizzy. if the petronix fails, I replace it with a set of points.

I have had a multitude of dizzys in the past.
79 small cap fully electronic with a Mallory hyfire/MSD blaster replacing the ignitor.
GM HEI

I am not a fan of the HEI or the 79 small cap with a different ignition system than stock..

We put that new dizzy in today, the one off ebay AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It wasn't hard at all,but I did have to go to advance and get a hold down because the old one will not work. At first we had it 180 out but once we figured that out and we got the plug wires straight it fired right up. We timed it by ear and it's smooth.I think it's going to work out great.I'll know for sure when I get it on the road. For now I couldn't be happier.

Dizzy Questions

hey I have a 67 FJ40 with the f engine, and I think I need a new dizzy, I'm not sure though. Right now I still have the original distributor in it. I think that something is wrong with my vacuum advance. We've redone the carburetor and still no change in performance. I've ordered a new Dizzy cap, and rotor, but if that doesn't work I'm not sure what to do. If I do need a new distributor where can I get them?

I ran a GM HEI out of a truck, switched gears and it ran great. When I installed my rebuilt 2F, I scored a "big cap" along with side cover from Mace. I sent it to Jim Chenoweth and he recurved it for my engine and it runs great.
I think any properly curved and installed distributor will improve the performance of any truck with a worn out/improperly installed/timed distributor.

But I like the big cap.

Thanks Mace.

So I screwed up :flipoff2:

The best way to check the vacuum advance module is to blow into the tube to the carb and suck on the carb tube with the engine running. If you can get the engine to change idle with consistancy (is that spelled right?) it is most likely not your vacuum module. Used to do this on airculd VWs all the time with success.

Note: I am going to go with the FJ60 dizzy I think unless I hear miracles from davis. Sounds like he is happy with the set up .

Question davis... What about replacement cap, etc with that set up? Is it available locally??

Here is another hmmm. I would guess, being relatively young to the F series and having most motor experience with those aforementioned air cooled VWs, If all holds true - so long as the gear and dimensions are correct; vacuum advance, semi electronic, electronic - what ever will mechanically fit from a Toyota motor, will always run the motor? It certainly could run the motor badly but it should start and run with the appropriate advance/retard?

Accel HEI with high voltage "Super Coil" on my 350. No complaints.
