After looking at the price of custom wheels and tires, I was wondering if something late model, like the Tacoma wheels, would fit onto these older vehicles. I called one shop and they said they were the same bolt pattern, but I figured this would be the real place to ask.
Thanks,

Nik

I believe that although the bolt pattern is the same the center hole is too small for the hubs on a 40.
But I've never tried it.

late model wheels have more backspacing so they would hit the tierod ends on early cruisers

They'll work. 6 on 5.5" bolt pattern, center hole appropriately spaced. Problem is backspacing. You need no more than 3.5" of it for a 40, and most newer Toy wheels are 4.25 - 4.75". Thus you need ~1" spacer to make them fit. I personally am a fan of said wheels on the 40s.

I run Tundra 16" steelies on my 40, but they need spacers as well.

3fj40, so you didn't have any problems with the front hubs then? Do you have any pics of them on your 40?
Thanks.

No, they fit perfectly (after BS adjustment). I've seen both Taco steels and Tundra steels fit the same. Granted I havn't seen aluminum but I'd imagine they hole's the same diameter.

In fact my brother has Taco steels running on his 80.

Do you have any pics of them on your 40?

I don't, but I can see what I can find/take?

I was wondering if the '05 Tacoma 17" aluminum wheels would fit and ya'lls opinion of the look. One inch spacer? There's a shop in town with a set of five with fairly decent looking original tires mounted. Would they look too ghey?

Yes, the late model 16" steel taco wheels fit right on a 40/55/60 frt axle. They have a little more backspacing, but because of the larger wheel diameter, the wheel weights are now outside of the steering arm.

It's as if the truck was designed for 16" wheels.

Here's a pic of 16x7 wheel w/ 315/75 (35x12.50) on FJ6x cruiser rear.

Here's a look at the inside of the front axle.

And the wheel specs off the inside of the rim.

A better fit would be achieved w/ a 255/85 tire and a 1/4" spacer, IMO.

Don't you have to worry about wheel bearings running a wheel with different backspacing? I have heard of people running through wheelbearings because they are running a wheel which incorrect back spacing. Is there any truth to this?

FJ40Jim

I found a set of cheap 16x7 steel rims from a tundra just like the ones
you show in the pic. But if there backspaece is over 4" would one need
at least a 3/4" to 1" spacer to be able to put them on FJ40/60? I would
really like to go to a factory toyota 16" wheel and am finding out they
are not that easy to come by...

The offset of the taco wheel and the cruiser wheel is practically the same.
The taco wheel is 1" wider than a 81-later Cruiser wheel.
That means the taco wheel sticks out 1/2" more, and sticks in 1/2" more.
If a 1/4" spacer is mounted behind the wheel it will stick in only 1/4" more than a stock wheel.

Because the Taco wheel is 16" diameter, it also moves the wheel lip 1/2" forward of the stock location.
This allows the wheel balancing weights to clear the tie-rods.

Sorry if I am not 'splaining it clearly.

Bottom line: look at the pics to see how the wheel fits with a 35x12.50 tire.

Thanks Jim. Would what you said hold true for 17" taco rims?

Dunno about the 17" rims. Being larger diameter, they should get even farther away from the tie-rod, which is one-half of the common interference problem.

The other common interference problem is the front calipers. The steel wheels clear the calipers fine. Will the alloys w/ thicker construction hit the calipers?

Will the 16" alloys w/ thicker material at the wheel lip hit the tierod/steering arm?

I've mounted the steelies on a Cruiser to see if it fits.

If somebody will stop by w/ some 17's and some 16" alloys, we'll mount those, see if they fit and take pics.

Props to Jason for bringing out the taco wheels one afternoon.

On a tangent...

Has anyone tried to chrome these stock taco steel wheels to make them look more like the stock 15" cruiser wheels?

I'm looking to get bigger tires and a small lift (shackles & AALs) but also retain the clean stock look. I do want to move to the 16" wheels for load capacity increases and also the larger variety of wheels types and sizes for a 16", but keep my cruiser looking as if it were stock, but with sick articulation with ford towers up front and custom shock mount crossbar in the rear for long travels.

What's the cost of chroming and is it worth it? The other option would be to buy new chromed in 16" which would still run me $100 a pop for the size wheel I'm looking at and if I need to get custom b/s.

15 x 7 Taco Alloys

I've successfully mounted 15" taco alloys (95-00) to my FJ-40. MC Motorsports on Ebay has 1.5" spacers that have their own studs all CNCed out of Aluminum. I actually have more space between the wheel lip and my tie rod/steering arm, about an inch.

Hey! thos look great on that 40!

That's more from running too little backspacing than too much. If the wheels are offset too far outwards they'll be hard on the bearings.
