Alright... 80amp and 100amp alternators interchangable?

Alternator on my parents' 100 is about to crap the bed at 167k. If the vehicle somehow came with an 80amp, will the 100amp be a direct swap-in? From what I've read searching, it seems like they are interchangeable... I'd pull things apart and find the number but my mom needs the car running basically 24/7 so no wrenching until I've got a new unit to put in there. And it only makes sense to buy the 100amp.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. When the bearings in my original 80A alternator went out I then installed the 100A version without issue.

What year did they make the change?

I was thinking there was a 130A upgrade path with a Sequoia alternator?

The 130A/150A Sequoia alternator utilizes a different shape connector plug. Apart of another long term project involving a MobiArc welder for my rig I opted not to move to the Sequoia alternator. Had one in hand courtesy of beno and I am confident the swap can be made ala the guys that have done it on their 80's...and I still have the plug if/when I decide to take that project on. OTOH I've had zero issues with the charge side of either the 80 or 100 amp units. Not bad considering the 4x batteries it keeps charged.

'98-'02 used 80 and 100 amp alternator.

'03-'04 added a 130 amp option. '05-'07 was 130 amp only AFAIK.

The '03+ IIRC utilize a different mount and I don't believe the '03+ can be retro'd to '02- (IIRCC).

Thanks for the info. 100amp ordered :D

Has anyone got a part number for the 100amp alternator?

100A LC alternator (reman): 27060-50260-84; $473.97 msrp
150A Sequoia alternator: 27060-0F050-84; $314.33 msrp

Thanks, I'll look into the cost of those and I'm also looking into price and availability of the M2K alternators in the UK. Would be nice to have some extra power for when the winch is in use.

Do the Sequoia 150A upgrade. You can be the guinea pig :D FYI: The Sequoia 150A alternator is a newly built, not reman, unit. The plug style changed so you have to spend a couple bucks for the pigtail on the connector side, from Toyota, and a little time splicing it in but everything I researched led me to believe it would work fine.

Next alt go around that's what I'm going to do...just for grins as the 100A I installed a couple years ago has kept my 4X big batteries (2-Lifeline Group 31's in the KK and the 2-Odyseys in the LC) properly charged....winch and 2 Waeco's, a coffee bean burr grinder and too many damn watts of sound system to reveal :D

If you have a part number(s) I will price that option but I don't think we get the Sequoia in the UK so I may run into difficulties sourcing the parts. How much is the Sequoia part in the USA? Importing one may be a better option than Toyota UK.

Jon,

I updated my post ^^^ to include both LC and Sequoia part #'s and prices. Sorry I do not have the later style square connector part #; I bought it from Onur/CDan.

The '03+ 130A LC alternator will work also but I think it also changed to the square shape connector.

Thanks, I'll see what I can find out :)

Correct connector PN is 90980-11964.

There is another connector PN floating around that is not correct.

^^^I was hoping you'd do the searching for me hoser :D

Seems like a good arrangement. You've done the hard work and I'll post the link!

Can't get the Sequoia alternator from UK dealers, doesn't show up on their systems. I'll see if I can import one when everything's back to normal next year!

Hmmm, I think I have read that the LX uses a 130 amp... Can anyone confirm?

The '03+ LC and LX AFAIK use the 130A version. You still need to change to the square type plug if you're converting from the older rectangular style AFAIK.

One more thing I forgot to mention Jon: The Sequoia 150A alternator uses a different style rectifier: "Avalanche" style. I discovered this when I was going after a MobiArc welder and Scott stated the MA welder wouldn't get along with the avalanche style rectifier. That was the only reason I didn't move forward with the 150A Sequoia alternator...but since then I've changed courses regarding the welder anyway so next time mine will get the Sequoia alt. FWIW.

And I'm not sure, one way or the other, what type of rectifier is used on the '03LC 130A alternator.

I'm also looking into the 120amp used on diesel 100's which I think have the same 3 pin oval connector, to see if the similar looking mounts are close enough to be adapted.
