Alright... 80amp and 100amp alternators interchangable?

Thanks loud, now to find a US supplier that will ship to the UK, I don't think the units on eBay are OEM or that would be an easy option.

Just a FYI for you guys: my 80 amp alternator was rebuilt by a local rebuilder into a 100amp unit. Seems that this is easy to do and the unit doesn't run any hotter. He assured me that the longevity is not decreased and gave me a lifetime warranty.

I just got off the phone with the REP from Smartbatterycharger.net

100 Series application:

$800 for the 250 AMP
$820 for the 270 amp
$1295 for the 350 AMP
$1395 for the 390 AMP

These are reseller prices, which I can get through my day job. They said that they will do better pricing for larger QTY purchases. Group Buy Time! The 270 looks to be the sweet spot.

If there's interest i will get going on the group buy. They also have alternators for other cruiser applications.

No one yet huh?
I am going to pick one up at the end of the month.

Other than your own little Manhattan Project, or powering a Motley Crue concert, what kind of stuff are you running on board that will pull that kind of load to need 270 amps?

It's not about the 270 amps. It's about the amps at idle. But heck, my 5 channel amp alone draws 50 amps. Then factor in lights.

I could change all external lights to LED's, but that would cost more that the alternator. Plus the lighting I run on my rack is bright and dirt cheap. I use Hella rubberized tractor lights. $12 a pop. I have 6 on the rack, four 6" facing front and two 4" one facing each side. I will be adding at least two rear facing on the rack as well. When idling the 100 and setting up camp for example, I would be draining the battery if I was using just the lights. The stock alternator will not put out enough power to compensate for the draw. If I chose to use the compressor at night, there is another 40 amps at idle.
As I said earlier in the thread, if the 100 had the hand throttle, it wouldn't be a problem. Bump the rpm's to 1200, set the hand throttle and bam, no loss while parked using more than stock power draw.
