Hi all

I know it feels a bit like this

27842-beating_dead_horse_what.jpg

but please help if possible.

I have a fully greased up prop shaft front and rear, and have done LOTS of searching and reading, I still cant work out here I should start with my clunky gear changes.

- Its not the loose diff mount
- Its not the dry props
- Its not the Ujoints
- Its not a low ATF level
- I know our cruisers have throtle sensors and not cables so its not the cable issue 80's get

If I keep my foot on the acelerator at a set level, it seems to go:
smooooooooth aceleration - tiny quick jump in revs - clunk as it changes gears.

I have jacked up the truck and there is a lot of roational play in the fornt wheels but the props dont move when I rotate the wheels, so... half shafts? Transmission? splines on the output shaft?

thanks

Is the ATF still good? A poorly shifting trans can be from low fluid or bad fluid. Sound like you need to do a major flush of the trans. Remove the pan, inspect, flush, drain, top off fluid.

Short of the trans. fluid change as suggested above, I don't know what else you could try.

Does it happen at all shift points, and under all acceleration levels?

I took the old man for a drive yesterday to get his imput and he described it really well, he said its feels like the engine is giving the running gear a rotational tug between gears.

"like that tug you give your foot when yout tieing your shoelaces..."

Sometimes it thuds, sometimes it dosent.
- I'll do a reflush of the trnas this weekend, (I did a baisic one a few weeks back but was in rush and just drained the old stuf and then topped it off)

The new wheels and tyres go on this weekend, along with a diff drop and longer arms for the anti roll bar so I will get the shop guys to do a full once over of ball joints, bushes, ballance, alighnment, and while its up on the lift ill see if I can find out whats up...... a bit iritating not being able to work out what it is :bang:

thanks guys :steer:

Ya, sounds like your describing a trans that is shifting under a load or gummed up fluid.

I'd try the major flush of the trans. There's a gasket or such that you'll need to buy when you remove the pan so be prepared with that. Also, when my pan was removed some bolts were cross threaded previously so be careful not to make that mistake. Not necessarily expensive but it's a big hassle to wait 24-36 hours for a pan.

If the flushing doesn't work, I'd suggest double checking your fluid and grease types. Assuming that's all correct, you're in some unfamiliar territory to me. Maybe make sure the "Pwr" button for the trans isn't selected. This button changes the shift points, making the trans feel more aggressive. It shouldn't be a big tug but it does have a lil of that feeling. When activated, the button stays depressed and there's a light on the dash cluster.
