Hi - I am interested in seeing if anyone has experience swapping the stock transmission with a ZF 6HP. I have found a kit available from a shop in Australia and the instructions seem like something I can tackle with my local shop. The issue I am running into is the donor transmissions listed are all from Austrailian Fords (Falcon and Territory) which don't seem like anything I've seen stateside (maybe the Falcon is a Taurus?).

Here is the adapter I found -> PJ's Off Road ZF6 6HP26 Land Cruiser Transfer Case Adapters - https://barratheworld.com/products/pjs-off-road-zf6-6hp26-land-cruiser-transfer-case-adapters

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's very similar to the 6r80 from a Ford f-150. It might mate to the f150 or even the transit but at the moment I wouldn't gamble on that $2k without actually having the drawings and double checking it would work.
These are great transmissions.

maybe the Falcon is a Taurus?)

Nope. It's not a Taurus. Similar size.

Pretty sure Falcon and Territory are both unique to Ford Australia.
The Barra engine in Falcon and Territory is an Aussie designed and built engine too

The transfer case adapter works for one end, what is used on the engine->trans connection?

The Ford Taurus is a front wheel drive car with a transverse mount so nothing from it will help.

That adapter works with the transfer case. What engine do you want?

I will say, I LOVED that transmission in my wife’s old LR3. I know it’s heresy, but I loved that whole vehicle minus the airbags.

A BMW M57 would be sweet. Many of them used the 6hp.

Based on what I see on the Barra Cruisers facebook page I wouldn't touch that adapter with a 10 foot pole. The spud shaft has engineering issues and the vendor isn't rectifying the issues or even aknowledging them.

The ZF6 came behind the mighty Ford "Barra" inline 6 that is very popular in Australia and NZ. I recommend joining that Facebook page and have a look at the reviews of the PJ's kit (they ain't great) - but there is another guy who is making a similar and much improved adapter.

What engineering issues does the spud shaft have? I am curious, as the kit I developed with DomiWorks has a spud shaft (spline adapter).

My swap is done and driving, but only have a little over 300 miles on it so far.

Thanks,

Mike

In early 2023 there was a load of drama where the shaft was stripping the gearbox output and transfer input shafts. Initially they thought it was hardness issue but was put down to installation drama. Have a search on their facebook page and you'll see it.
