You guys think $75 is a fair price?

A girl who works in the same shopping center backed-up into the LC last week. Just caved-in the plastic bumper ends but cracked the paint. So the paint needs to be refinished again. I had them refinished last summer and have held up pretty well until now.

I'm assuming she didn't have insurance because she quickly offered $200 right away when I asked for her insurance info. When I asked her if she had insurance, she said that her boyfriend had all the information, etc., etc. I could've quickly taken her $$ but I knew it wasn't going to cost $200 to get them re-done again. Since I knew her boss, I knew she wasn't going to get away without paying to get it re-done. I'm actually getting them re-done again at no cost since a friend is a painter at a dealership. So I told her that it will cost $75 to get that bumper end to get re-painted again. So you guys think $75 was a fair price to ask?

I think you are being too kind. If you had to have it done without your buddy's help it would probably run about the $200 she offered because you have to figure prep time for the shop to buy the paint, spray and clean their equipment. Also I don't know how well plastic pieces can be repaired when they are forced out of shape like that. I have always heard they have to be replaced if they are creased like that so you may need to figure that cost instead. Don't forget your time, she is the one who messed up, and you are the one who is being put out. I am not saying screw her over, just be fair to yourself as well. My $.02.

Get whatever it would cost to have it fixed from a body shop unless she is a friend of yours.

Then you can tip out your buddy for hooking you up and fix/upgrade something else on your truck. Bodyshop friends are good people to know and to stay on their good list.

Can the dent be pressed/hammered out to your satisfaction prior to painting? Is any of the attaching hardware behind the end cap bent or damaged?

I'd suggest a little research on the price new plus paint or used from cruiserparts.net plus paint and don't forget the attachment hardware in either estimate.

I'd even go to one or two body shops and get estimates from them.

Don't let her off easy. Accept nothing but the end cap back to where it was prior to her hitting you.

My wife smacked ours on the frame of the garage door. It did not dent the "Cap" but bodywork alone was $197....remove, prep, paint, replace..... IIRC the part (Cap) was around $180 unfinished. Hope this helps.

I would get an estimate from a body shop and charge her that, look at it like this if you did not have a buddy who could do it, it would be costing her what the body shop would do it for, and you owe her no favours she hit your truck. And besides we all know nice guys finish last, so think only of yourself.

C'mon guys. A new part is $85 tops. You are getting it redone for free anyway so what's the diff if she did it or you accidentally bumped it?

She is lucky to hit something you were getting redone. I think your $75 request is fair.
I don't like the "take all you can" mentality. Be fair and honest.
