yester days luch break..... ::updated with final pics::

ok so yesterday at work we all decided to try this savidorian restraunt right around the corner so me and 4 others pile into my truck and drive to the restraunt....

On the way there i drove across a ditch (a big ditch) and up and over a telephone hill that was layed onto the ground on the other side truck crawled up and over no problem (2wd lo) everyone is laughin and having a good time then i get to the next pole to go over so i can get into the parking lot and i got hung up...

I saw the tire was real far back in the fender and the shackle was nearly compressed (drive shaft had NOT come off yet)... so i lock the hubs toss it in 4 lo and it starts to come then it spun the fronts and the rear quit diggin.... get out look again and the driveshaft had now popped out...

I shrug it off and we go inside to eat (me thinking ill just put the driveline back in and back up off of it) I mean afterall this is small compared to lots of other things i have driven over. and i didnt hit the pole hard at all in fact i hardly felt it.

EDIT: for anyone in concern this was a legal place to be driving as it is an overflow parking lot. driving over the poles was my way for a quick enter/ exit of the lot.

The wheel went the wrong way, something major (like a main leaf) has to be broken, or else the hanger pulled off the frame.

well after i ordered my food i decided to take another look at why the shaft had come out as i didnt do anything extreme and here is what i see....

aparently the spring perch on the driverside busted off and when it did it went clean as a whistle!

SO i went back inside ate my food and made some calls and 2 hours later a buddy showed up to help. I had already got the high lift out and lined the spring back up with the frame and used some car tie downs i had to pull the axle forward some (then some more after i backed up to ensure it was good and tight) and another car tie down to keep the spring against the frame and hold the driveshaft up. all it took was a small tug from behind and the front locker did the rest i was off. drove into a parking space and 15min later i had the perch all lined up and ready to go bought the motorcycle shop a bottle of gas (exchanged at northern tool for $37.xx) so i could weld it up (he actually did it for me i think my welds are better but oh well) and then drove it home.

I had to pull the rear shaft as it was bent (anything over 30mph would shake the truck apart) and drove it home in 4wd hi. not a big deal except that i have an autolocker up front and it would act goofy when i would let off the gas then get back on it (steering wheel would pull for a sec till it locked up) but no big deal really. drove fine and was super easy to spin the front tires.

Whoa good you got it fixed. What do you think wore it down to this point of snapping off?

Glad you are ok and was a simple fix .. I'm pretty sure that you verify all other 7 sping contact points to the frame .. just to be sure it not gonna happen again ..

couldnt honestly tell ya. I know on the inside of the frame rail it has a couple small rust holes but where it broke on the outter edge showed no signs of rust at all.

My best assumption would be all the stress over the years and it finally just gave out.

didnt weld any of teh others but i will once i get a welder over here. I check em all and they showed no signs of stress nor does the frame have cancer really any place else.

Good to know. Those are only riveted in place. It looks like the bottom two had heads that were too thin, either from the factory or due to rust and pulled through which then sheared the side rivet. Anywho, it looks like a good fixm that's last another 25 years at least.

actually the bottom 2 studs are just that. studs theyre only purpose is to hole the peice in place and to keep it from trying to slide forward, back, and side to side (obviously this is alot of support and strength added but still). the only peice that is actually fixed to the frame from the factory at all is the 1 whole peice on the side that sheared... meh oh well now we know. (by we i mean I and anyone else who didnt know everyone else shut up:flipoff2:)

I decided to update this thread a little bit...

when the rear driveshaft came apart it spun and hit the log and bent it up so i sent it out to the driveshaft shop to have it re-tubed 1 day turn around (bad weather) and $125.00 later ive got a new (almost) driveshaft for the rear.

what is this? any takers?

Shouldn't the slip joint be at the t-case end?

You did a nice job on that, not that it's my taste, but still a nice job.

yea i was thinking that as well but its where it was when i got the truck so i just assumed it was correct and never looked past it tho i dont think it will hurt anything (nor has it in the past) i will have to change it cause now i know its wrong.

i think i was goin for more barber shop pole or candy cane not a circus...

I dont like clowns....
