[Mooker, is there a shop near you that has Yakima racks? if so, you can ask them if they'd allow you to put one on your roof to guage size.[/QUOTE]

There are a few shops around but none of them stock the load warrior baskets, much less the mega warrior, that I have found. Plus when I asked about them getting me one they quoted me a $75 drop ship charge as well. Ive been hoping to come across one on ebay and am kind of holding out for that to happen. I think Ill go with the megawarrior because I like the way that one looks on your truck Norcal.

Doug,

Looks like you've got a couple of jerry cans of gas in that last pic. How are they secured? Always looked at Yakima and thought it would be hard to secure jerry cans given the rounded bottom of the rack. That's partly why I liked the INTI that Alvaro had was because of the area at the front of the rack that was designed with jerry cans in mind.

Mook- a word of advice about e-bay shopping.

I bought my 'mega warrior' rack, with extension- on e-bay a couple of months back. When it arrived it was odviously the Load Warrior. I was pissed- but had no recourse and the seller had been shipped off to Iraq so I couldn't get a refund even if he cared about it, which he didn't.

Now I"m stuck with a little rack on the 'tank'.

I used 72" load bars....

Doc - that sucks...but good advice.

Mook - Doc thinks the Load Warrior is a little rack...
If you're concerned about proportions, I think the MegaWarrior is the right size for the 80's proportions.

I had them secured fairly poorly :frown:

There's a cross-bar that Yakima provides for the rack. It installed it so it would secure the jerry cans from sliding front-to-back. To prevent side-to-side movement, I used a ratchet strap and a bungee cord. Ratchet strap to secure and bungee to prevent minor sliding. It worked okay, but the many miles of washboard roads were tough on the set up. Things kept coming loose.

Both Sleeoffroad and expedition-exchange sell a jerry can holder. I'd get one of those for the next trip. Might get two -- I have a couple black water cans (same size & shape as jerry cans) - that I take on trips too...

Given the choice between Yakima and other expedition type racks, I don't think I'd choose the Yakima. The Yakima is cool if you want your rack to multi-task, but that's not really what I need.

Doug - thx for info. Certainly a less expensive option than the 'true' expedition racks. Then again, you get what you pay for. I remember you guys on top of Alvaro's rack at S&T. I remember those black water jugs you hauled down and then poured out too!

Goal is to have at least one if not two gas jerry cans and two water jerry cans. Kaymar's bumper allows one jerry can. I don't want gas inside the truck.

If you're starting from scratch, I wouldn't necessarily consider the Yakima set up less expensive.
I bought:
1 MegaWarrior rack, plus the extension for the rack,
3 cross bars,
6 towers, plus 6 locks
1 pair of locking clamps for the rack
1 cargo net for securing the load (very handy)

If you're going to do other stuff with it, this is nice since all you need now are the various components.

If all you want is a rack, this is more expensive than some other options currently on the market (e.g. the Kaymar Tradesman oval tube rack is less expensive).

On the upside...overall, the Yakima set up is fairly light weight and quite strong. It would serve the needs for most people's hauling requirements.

Rumor has it that the Intis are coming...I'll let you know when they arrive if you're interested.

I suggest a Yakima fairing - it will help to quel the annoying howl from those round bars. Looks pretty cool too:

OTH if you are carrying a bunch of gear on top you will get mundo wind noise anyway, so never mind...

It is loud - my wife and I thought it was radio interference or brakes dragging until we realized it was the racks.

Also, mileage drop of at least ten percent highway based on about a thousand two thousand kilometers of analysis since the rack went up.

That is a BIG 2-year old!!

Where, besides ebay, is a good place to get Yakima at a decent price?

Yup - I take the rack off for any long highway trip that doesn't call for a ski rack or bike or sumpin - I really noticed the fuel savings and quieter ride with the rack in the garage....

It comes off so quickly I don't mind doing it. I have a couple of big storage hooks up high on my garage wall.

I do think it looks pretty cool on the truck though....
