I should be picking up some of these soon off ebay. Anybody know off the top of their head how long of a crossbar i will need. 58", 65" not totally sure, just dont want something rediculously long.

Hang on I'll go downstairs and measure mine.

Measured them - 58", and they stick out a few inches past the rain gutter.

IIRC, they come in 58", 60" and 72". I've got the 72" because they're long enough the haul two canoes. The nice thing about this set-up, unless you're taller than about 6'2", you can step out of the vehicle with out knocking your head, unlike other smaller SUV's (Jeep Cheerokee  )

The length really depends on what you're going to be hauling. It's hard to find the 72" bars on ebay, but otherwise, you can come across some smokin deals. I got my towers with key locks for 26 bucks (set of four). You can't beat that.

Rookie, thanks but im basically looking for the shortest crossbar needed to work. i am running a yakima mega warrior so there is no need to 72'' thanks though.

Get the longest bars you're comfortable with. You'd be surprised how useful the extra few inches on the sides can be. For instance, while camping I've slid the bars all the way to one side to make a nice pair of sturdy hanging locations for drying stuff, hanging a solar shower, etc. I've also carried a lot of stuff alongside a gigantic roof box. And of course the most important part - it looks more serious and we know how important that is....

I stand corrected. Looks like the lengths are 48", 58", 66" and 78". I wouldn't be 100% sure the 48" bars are long enough to go tower to tower on an 80. You might surf a little on yakima's site (yakima.com) to see what all they make... bars, accesories, etc..

I would say that if I pushed my 58" bars all the way to one side of the car they would provide about 6-7" of bar on the outside of the tower.

I suppose you could buy longer bars than you think you need and cut them down to size later.

I have a MegaWarrior on my 80. I have 58" bars. These are the shortest ones available that will work.

As for getting longer -- that's up to you.

I just sold a set of nearly new 1A towers on e-bay! Did you buy them? BIN of $40?

Anyway....

Sorry to hijack but would one of you running the mega warrior basket post up a good pic....Ive been wanting to buy one and am trying to decide between the warrior and megawarrior....im worried that the smalller basket will look goofy on the big roof of an 80
thanks

I'm not sure if these are what you're looking for. I have pics on 2 different PCs -- these are the best I can find on this one. All pics are from slightly different angles. Do note that I have the extension installed, so the MegaWarrior I have is longer than what you might get (unless you get the extension too).

Thanks for the pics....I have a hard time visualizing what some things will look like on my cruiser....I like the width of the megawarrior....I suspect that the smaller yakima basket would be too narrow to fit the roofline of the wide 80

Do you mean the tiny one, the Basketcase? I worked out that you can fit two side-by-side on 58" crossbars if you mount them on top of the crossbars (as opposed to flush mount). I use the basketcase and yes, it looks pretty dainty up there :princess: but all I haul is potato chips, beach chairs and boogie boards. However, my 45 lb. two year old gets up there and dances on it with nary a bend or a flex. Next time I'm in California I will be picking up as LoadWarrior to bring down here, if QANTAS allows it...

I think he's trying to decide between the Load Warrior and the Mega Warrior baskets.

The sizes go from (smallest to largest): basket case, Load Warrior, Mega Warrior.

Mooker, is there a shop near you that has Yakima racks? if so, you can ask them if they'd allow you to put one on your roof to guage size.

58" the shortest that will work?

Ughhh. Thought all I needed to transfer my "new" Yakima set-up was some gutter mounts...

(Walking away, head down, to take a pic of 48" bars and rack mounts/locks/fairing to sell to somebody with a 4Runner).....

I've got a pair of brand new 58" bars waiting for a good home PM me an offer I can't refuse.

I haven't taken a rule to them yet, but can later this morning, but with the 58" bars, you get about 3 or 4" extra bar on each side of the towers.

Given that, I don't think the 48" bars will work...a tad too short.

I suggest a Yakima fairing - it will help to quel the annoying howl from those round bars. Looks pretty cool too:

OTH if you are carrying a bunch of gear on top you will get mundo wind noise anyway, so never mind...

IIRC (at least for Thule) the towers are the component that is quite expensive. The bars are (relatively) dirt cheap - almost to the point where you could have different sizes. If the towers fit your truck, just buy a new set of bars.

Cheers, Hugh
