Bought a Yaesu FT-1802M a few weeks ago from a guy on craigslist, very slightly used, but only $80. I tested it before I bought it, and again when I brought it home, worked fine. My goal is to do a low-buck base unit that I can use when I'm in the garage tinkering, since my handheld isn't hitting my 2 favorite repeaters.

I was in the shop the other day dinking around with an old spare computer power supply, trying to make it into a 12V power supply. At one point I hooked the radio up to it, but it won't work, every time I try to turn the radio on, the PS shuts down, as if it's drawing too much current. At one point I must have done something wrong, because now no matter what type of 12V supply I hook it to, the radio just spews a constant annoying tone, and only displays the current input voltage on the display (common for Yaesu rigs when you first turn them on).

Any ideas? I really don't want to send this thing out and spend $100 to have it repaired, that kinda kills the bargain. But I also don't wanna just chuck it and lose the $80.

My 2800 will not work on low voltage. It shuts down at around 10 volts. Have you measured the output from the power supply?

When I first connected it to the home-brew PS, it was only putting out about 11.6V, so the radio wouldn't even turn on. Then I hooked it up differently to get the voltage a little higher, but as soon as I tried to turn the radio on, the PS would shut down. Now, when I connect the radio to the battery in my car with a nice solid 13V output, the radio only shows the voltage on the display and spews out the solid tone. Pushing any of the buttons has no effect, it just sits there and howls.

Check the manual for the reset sequence.

Welcome to Yaesu.com

I tried a home brew PS and fried a am/fm/sw radio. Luckily, the guy at Sangean was TOTALLY cool and gave me another, free, even after I admitted what I did.

I don't know why I didn't think about doing that. Full reset, radio is back to life. Sucks that I lost all the station programming before I had a chance to download and save it, but at least it's not fried. The guy even gave me a programming cable and software with it, so off I go...

Thanks!!!
