WTF! wont go into gear, pls help

After backing out of my driveway, my 84 fj 60 wont go into gear, any gear. I had my wife step on the clutch and it looks like the arm by the tranny is moving, but the shifter wont budge. Any ideas, this truck is supposed to be sold! Thanks, john

Will it go into and out of reverse? If so I'd be checking out the rubber/nylon ring that sits under the shifter in the tranny top cover. Those degrade over time and keep the shifter from going into different gates.

Just what I was thinking of too. The ring in my transmission broke and got stuck in reverse and I had to drive the remaining mile home in reverse.

Yeah, my ring went and i couldn't use 1st or 2nd gear. I was on my way to a shop when it happened and they charged me 465 dollars to fix it. I think i got ripped...

Yep, ya got ripped! I did mine with about $20 in parts and an hour or two. Mine failed outside of Mazatlan, Mexico and I ended up driving all the way to Vancouver, B.C. Canada in 3rd or 4th! Everyone along the way wanted $2000 - 3000 + a couple of days to fix it!!!

I vowed never to return to a shop after that little incident
