I thought I did not prep it correctly.

No, that will not work for header paint. It turns black & crinkles up after one good highway run.

Not that I would try it or anything...

The same company makes a high-heat header paint that's good to 1500F. I've used it in silver color. Works pretty good on bare metal.

I used that company's high heat header paint on my MAF headers, and it's sticking pretty well 6 months later.

Make sure to let it dry before running the engine though. Makes a horrible stink if you don't.
