Would you feel okay buying a 100 series with 100k+ miles on it?

I know that these cars are built to last but i'm just having a hard time starting payments on a car that has could have that many miles on it.

I want to get a 100 or even an 80 series but I want to mod it and don't feel like paying $30k for a vehicle that I will be hacking at and doing mods to so the idea of maybe a 14-17k budget sounds better especially since a lot of times the mod's bring the car down in value.

So looking at something that will be reliable for another 100k miles and used daily. I've never put that many miles on a vehicle before (I usually get bored and end up buying something else) but the LC would be here to stay.

What's the though from some of you owners? I'm not to bad at turning wrenches either so I can do some maintenance here and there.

I bought my 60 with 204K on it...

Then again, it's not my DD, but I did trust it enough to drive it across country without a single problem.

Thanks

I love those black wheels man! I wonder if they make the good old black steel wheels that people use on jeeps in a toyota bolt pattern and size? I always liked those, nice cheap and black!

IIRC, someone here was selling or importing some steelies for the 100. Can't remember exactly though.

no prob with 100K if it's in good shape, will most likely last a long time...

i got my 99' LX (2uz-fe) at 112k. Runs like a champ at 135k. Just changed plugs for the first time (ever) also one ignition coil today. Besides that its been just the basic oil, break, and airfilter changes. Nothing major so far. Definitly a keeper. good luck and keep us filled in on the future mods.

At 100k miles, just make sure the timing belt, pulleys, accessory belt, water pump, etc are changed. This will add around $1000 if you do everything.

edit -

I forgot to mention the starter. A lot of starters have been clicking (not starting) at around 80k miles. I would install new contacts and a plunger at this time as well.

Good info.

I would want one that had the timing belt changed, if not then price lowered and then I would do it myself. It's funny because you see a lot of them for sale at 90k miles or so! I bet almost none of them have had the belt done.

Bought my 80 w/158k with no worries. I expect it to last me at min. of another 100k.

At least another 100K. To answer the question, YES.

I would not hesitate to purchase a "clean" 100 series with 100-150,000 miles on the odometer.

The initial savings with finding an older, higher mileage rig would be beneficial to your cause..especially (considering) what you intend to do with it as soon as you purchase it ( I.E. trail mods, etc..)

I would wheel and deal on the price, then throw a $1000 bucks or so into the engine (T-belt, water pump, ALL hoses and belts.. fluids, etc..) and call it a day.

Oh yeah...THEN, build that bad-boy and wheel the hell out of it !! :D

edit: I wouldn't buy a 100 with 100K from SINCITY! :D

HEY !!

I am not THAT hard on my vehicles !!

BUT...

There is NO WAY I would buy a vehicle from myself !! :D

Purchased my 99 with 100k miles for 17k with all records and the 90k service done. It is was and is still missing a sunroof. I spent 4 hrs on a saturday replacing the starter contacts. Just finished my 4th mod, 285 STTs.

I would expect another 200k or more out of this truck and maybe one day I will cut a sunroof in it.

uzj100

PS - 100k is nothing on these 25+ year service life vehicles.

Absolutely. Just make sure you're up on maintenance.

I just bought a 98 LC with 115K miles on it. That is my 5th toyota I bought over 100K on the clock. Since now I haven't been a major issues on either of them. When I bought it 90K svc done and t-belt replaced. I just performed a 120K miles svc from a tech who do on the side at his dealship, he gave me a killer deal. It has all new fluids, runs solid now.

Lower the mileage is always better, but the LC/LX will last 250K + with regular care. You can find 99-00's with around 50K miles. If like me you only drive 8-10K per year you can get a low mileage LC and drive it 4-5 years before you even get 100K miles on it.

"Would you feel okay buying a 100 series with 100k+ miles on it?"

I almost never feel okay.

<grin>

Seriously, it all depends on how it was driven and maintained.

Buying from someone like me, I'd buy one with over 200k without any worry or concerns whatsover.

Buying from someone like most people I witness on the road, knowing also the way most people neglect vehicle maintenance, I'd be wary of buying a used vehicle at all, regardless of make/model/year/mileage.

Does that make you feel better? :)

I bought my 96 LX w/112k as my DD and recently bought my wife (and baby) the 98 LX for her DD, I have no concerns about it. My last LC (93 FZJ80) had about 200k when I sold it, it had no problems for the 25k miles that I owned it, and most of my friends thought it was new or maybe a couple years old, it was 11-12 years old at the time.
