Would you buy a fleet/rental 200 series (LC or LX) at CarMax if you also purchased the 6 year 100K extended warranty (that seems to get good reviews when taking it to a dealer)? There are lots of LCs and LXs in CarMax inventory but nearly all of them are fleet/rentals.

I know there are a few rental LCs in the SLC market. From what I have seen they usually rent at a premium for more of a luxury play and therefore likely do not get abused much in the process. There are probably exceptions, and I'm sure that opinions on this vary, but if it looks pretty clean it would not phase me at all to get a rental LC or LX. I have bought a number of rental trucks for my companies fleet directly from the fleet auctions or rental companies in the past. There are some problem ones out there, but for the most part, I've had very few problems. I say if the price is right and it passes your inspection and looks clean go for it! I wouldn't worry too much about it!

I personally wouldn't shy away from buying a fleet/rental vehicle as long as maintenance and everything looks good. Some of these fleet/rental programs have strict maintenance programs and therefore the vehicles are kept in good condition. Others not so much. But either way, use it to your negotiation advantage, assume down the line that if you were to sell the vehicle, it carrying a fleet/rental designation at any point in it's life may/will lower it's value. It's the perception, whether it's correct or not. Find a good one that's been maintained and beat them down on price and go for it!

as I understand it Carmax has excellent warranties so that would be a perk for you. more than likely the rental person was an executive who never even touched dirt to the tires and had his or her admin person take the rig to the dealership for service. I'd be ok with it if it was my purchase

Carfax are very particular about the vehicles that list for sale, usually in excellent condition and buy back guaranty too if buyer is not satisfy in certain period of time, can't remember how many days now.

The flip side of Carmax is that you're (usually) paying a premium on the actual sales price as well, so factor in the fact that Carmax is frequently 5-15% over what I'd call a 'good deal' in the Truecar/Carguru sense of things. Sure, they should be good examples, but you're going to pay a premium for that as well as if you also get the aftermarket warranty, which varies significantly in cost by make/model.

For resale, vehicles previously used as a rental or fleet vehicle have a lower value than those which were not. So the final price should take that into account, since I'm sure the dealer (CarMax) took that into account when purchasing the vehicle.

My '08 Acura MDX was the dealer service loaner. We bought it one year old with <12k miles for >20% less than new. No issues with it due to it's prior life (a couple sensors and a wheel bearing went bad, and the DVD drive in the Nav system went out). I traded it at 75k for the LC, but only because the MDX wasn't really designed to pull my trailer, but I'm sure it would have gone 150k miles even with regular overloading when towing.

If the price is good and the vehicle looks good, I'd consider it. If you find any signs that it was once driven as a rental, then it probably was and I'd avoid that.

Gotcha, thank you. No interest in a LX.

I have been happy with my used car experience with CarMax they are priced fairly...No back and forth BS and their in house financing rate is great 2.9%
I was out of there in 1.5 hrs.

I bought my daughters '11 RDX at Carmax with 15k on it and it was in excellent shape and the price was right in line with what I was seeing elsewhere... not great, but not all that bad. Of course she wrecked it twice in the first year (only one of those her fault) has countless door dings and has about 60k on it so it's not nearly as nice now as it was then :)

I'd buy from them again for sure. I'd never sell to them though... they offer up far less than you can get by trying just a little bit on your own.

I can't figure out how they can offer to move vehicles to other dealers for no charge. The one week reserve option is also pretty cool.

there are several 200's in houston area that are well priced..... if they're TX trucks they're likely very clean. Happy to check one out for a fellow Mudder when I get back. I saw 4-5 of CL and more on trader.. got a friend looking for a 16' newer so was shopping last night.
