So I'm deep into negotiations with the owner of this '07 w/ 102k. It need a TB/WP and new brakes. Interior is amazingly clean! However, I just found out it was involved in a parking lot fender bender back in '09 and that it has rust. It is priced at $19.5k. It's about to go to the dealer for inspection. Not sure if I'll fly and drive it back or transport. Thoughts??

2005 LX470

This is what rust should look like on a Nevada/Texas truck. Rust is about the only thing that can kill a 100 series. Yours can be cleaned up with wire brush, rust arrester, and rustoliem which you need to do if you buy this 100 series. Most of yours looks surface.

Is yours factory frame paint or did you have to rust treat? My 4Runner is rust free (minus a couple weld spots) but yes, I agree it I were to purchase, that will be the first on the list of cosmetics. Even though it's surface rust, is it worth the $19.5k? Things like this are just time consuming and annoying to me. I've had rusty trucks in the past only to get fed up and pissed off. But those were WAY worse than this. What body spots other than the rear upper lift gate do I need to look at??

Yeah, where I am from we don't call this rust either. Many of those parts won't rust through in our lifetime....

If your willing to fly and buy, I'd stick with a southern truck. It seems like it's well priced, even though I don't understand the significant bump on 06+.

Are there any MUST check spots seeing as you're familiar with rust?

If I was in the market, I would buy as long as the repairs were done right. That rust is not bad.

That's my concern. At $19.5k it will still need probably close to $2500 in baseline repair. I've got him down $1500 from where we started but now knowing whats ahead, is it worth it. Basic 3k oil maintenance, radiator fluid, tune-ups have all been done. Nothing major except an entire AC system. I'm guessing do to rust or corrosion in the lines??

As far as I am aware, AC lines are aluminium (yes, I spelled that correctly) and thus not prone to rust. Generally speaking, the only rust I worry about is body related. That said, while the rust in your pics is no big deal in my book, it DOES impact price. I don't know US pricing so can't comment to that. But SWUtah's pics are of a sweet looking undercarriage and would fetch a premium compared to "normal" in my book.

I am not aware of 100's having specifics rust weak spots besides the rear hatch if the brake light leaks or a drain is clogged or something. Surely other experts will chime in on that or check Slee's guide.

Ive been scouring the entire NW-W-SW area for a while now. Nothing is coming up that fits my bill of low miles and great records. This is the first in the color combo, ownership, and year. I'm not a fan of the AHC or the surface rust but the price seems close to right. Why do you think the 06+ bump? My guess is most people don't keep them more than 10yrs or are digging the new options of luxury SUVs.

The '06/07 get that bump primarily because of the VVti motor - 35 more HP and same MPG. That and the LED lights, different grille, etc.

Rust just sucks. Yeah, it may not rust through, fail, etc in your lifetime, but can make it a pain in your and your mechanic's ass tomorrow. Want to see a 30 min. job turn into a 90 minute job... twist off or strip some rusty bolts. I've just had too many trucks (jeeps) with rust... I'm probably a bit jaded. I'd rather go through the hassle once finding/shipping a rust-free truck... then years of dealing with it.

Don't limit yourself to just the W and SW. My '06 grew up in Georgia. Humid as hell, but zero real winters. This is with 112,000 miles and a bunch of trips off-road on GA clay.

Yeah, I'm coming from and still have Early Broncos. I've fought several with rusty bodies and broken bolts. I'll update with pics once it's on the lift but it sounds like even at $19.5k, the rust is still not worth it....yes? I tried making a deal on a super clean, high mileage/impeccable dealership records SC rig, but the owner of the wholesaler outfit said he didn't have time for me. Awesome. Do these frames rust from the outside in or are they pretty well boxed to avoid rusting inside out?

Mine never had rust but I live in Austin and every year I get under my truck and check for "any" discoloration that might indicate rust starting and I treat it and then spray it with rustoliuem. With a 2" lift and a crawler it a 10-15 minute job to keep everything looking better then new. The bottom of my truck looks better then the top. After getting yours on a lift if the rust is just surface, buy it and then clean it up and then maintain it by touching everything up once a year.

Mine was an 02' one owner Rig from Arizona!! There out there. I'd wait. Find the right one for that kind of coin!! Just my op though!!

Check the undercarriage body wields, at the seam under the doors, including rear hatch and above spare tire. If you see any rust walk.

If you think that is rust, you clearly have never seen a midwestern/northeastern truck...

That LC has nothing at all that would stop me from buying it.
