As the post states.. if the car is in good shape would you consider it?
What would be the most you would pay?

I think there are a lot of factors involved for a question like that. If you could post a wealth more of information I could try to chime in more. Generally speaking mileage isn't a concern on a well maintained - rust free vehicle. That being said these trucks are going on 20 years of age and 450k miles is nothing to sneeze at, so the price has to be right

What car / year , LC or LX
How is the service history
Is it rusty
Any known issues

This is not a simple yes/no type question. There are many variables and what your definition of "good shape" is.

These are what I would be thinking about to help determine what it's worth to you:
-Rust: If anything more than a teeny tiny bit I would pass.
-Prior maintenance history: Anything? A stack of records?
-Year of truck: Is it a 98 or an 07? Also plays into price / features / wants

I'd consider it, for sure but it would have to be nearly free. Pre-covid there were sub $5000 units with half those miles. It's a bit harder to find them these days. I bought my 1999 LX with 350,000km in 2016 for $2500US and it is still the best vehicle I have ever owned. Ridiculously easy to maintain. I'll bet I have put less than $1500 in parts into it in 8 years.

I'll second @lowenbrau on the low price, but offer one other option. A super clean UZJ100 with meticulous maintenance records and reasonable proof that most of those miles were road miles would also be in consideration for me. There's a huge variance in use even for the same miles that has to be considered.

Also, UZJ100s aren't that rare that you need to be considering super high mile examples. You can get cheap 100s with 250K miles if you are patient and account for baselining, so going to a 450K mile example should be an extreme (i.e. super cheap or tons of great modifications and exceptional maintenance records).

i would consider it but price is going to vary on multiple things as mentioned above. if its kinda rough but its just going to be a woods beater 500 all day, yoiu can probably make a good chunk of that back on parting it out or sell it whole for the drive train. if this is going to be a dd id want to see service records, truck would have to be in fairly good shape and id probably go no more than 2k. i think the mileage is going to work in your favor to bring the price way down

I would not buy a primary vehicle with 400k on it. I’d buy a second/third/fourth vehicle with any number of miles though, depending on the price.

can they still perform well at that milage? Sure, but if you need a yes/no then no I would not

I purchased pre-covid an 01 with 430k miles for $4k. It was completely rust free and had 67 THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of service records that came with it from the local lexus dealership. It was registered as this guy's company car and no expense was spared on it. He drove between Alabama and California a lot racking up the miles. He had stopped driving it regularly about two years before he decided to sell it. I still had to put about 2k into it fixing a few things: steering rack, timing belt job and exhaust manifold. After that though it was completely trouble free.

Dealership equals insta-"NO" from me.
Sometimes with these rigs a dealership isn't always a bad thing. I found my dealer maintained GX470 and the guy just dumped loads of service dollars into this thing throughout the years.

OP , put the VIN in Toyota owners and if it doesn't have rust and under $5K go for it.

Car, no. Land Cruiser, yes.

My '99 with 308K (and much PM and repair work over the years) immediately needed a brake booster pump assembly, and needed a steering rack within a year, CV axles, a fuel pump, fuel pump wiring repair, knock sensors (and starter while in there), valve cover gaskets, and now needs AHC globes. I do all my own work, and have mostly enjoyed working on it - this would otherwise have bankrupted me if done by a dealer.

I would argue that a high miles LX/Land Cruiser is simply going to continue to eat money over time. I bought mine knowing this, so I'm OK with it. I also didn't pay too much for the vehicle in the first place.

If this 450K truck had tons of records and was rock solid, $5K is ALL I would pay for it. I'd rather get it for $3500.

A couple at Church drove up in a nice looking white LX470.
I asked what year - 1999. He said it was a great vehicle and has over 350K miles.
So if that one has been well maintained it might make a nice ride.

Over here in the land of big mining holes (Australia) we pay a lot more for everything including LC 100 turbo diesels with some advertised up to $50k. I have had 80,100 TD, 200 petrol V8, 2 200 series TDV8 and many BMW's I had had enough of changing cars and decided to go old school and bought a 512K km highway kms LX470 2004. I had viewed them a LC 100 with some fancy bits and I was very wrong about that. The AHC functions perfectly, interior immaculate and 19 years maintenance by the same Toyota specialist and had never been offroad. We don't usually have to worry about rust here as its pretty dry.
I took the view that every car needs to be serviced and the 200 series is known for very expensive injectors and dusting turbos due to poor airbox design etc plus we get shafted with stamp duty which can amount to thousands every time we buy a car. I may regret my decision but after choking on an $8k gearbox rebuild on my 740li (probably due to poor work at a specialist) I then dropped $10k to get rid of it as I didn't want a 6' kangaroo to join me in the drivers seat (previously written off another 740i but it didn't come through the windscreen) and I am just getting the timing belt and fan carrier done in the LX as we speak and it seems an almost inconsequential cost compared to the money I have wasted over the years. Sorry for being a bit long winded but as a crusty 60 year old my perspective has changed a bit in the last few years and if I pay for it I KNOW its been done in my own farm workshop by a qualified mechanic instead some "specialist shop" charging $250 an hour for substandard work and $300 to plug in a laptop!

I would not buy a primary vehicle with 400k on it. I’d buy a second/third/fourth vehicle with any number of miles though, depending on the price.

This. And it would be for myself, not my Ms or a relative. And I would probably have to have known the truck/ owner prior to purchase unless it was only going to be a trail truck.

Pretty clean drove nice has a decent amount regular maintenance over its whole life according to car fax...1-2 owner minimal rust. Sunroof issues and telescopic steering did not work
Asking 11999...were motivated to make a deal

Make sure this gets addressed soon. I'm surprised how good the seats look.
