My daughters 2002 LC with 252k miles has a worn front carrier, making lots of noise. Took is to the dealer just so I could be 100 percent on my diagnosis. I’ve been on car-part.com and a low mile, 160k, front carrier is like $1300!

I’m hoping that for that kind of money I could have someone do a quality rebuild? I do not need lockers or anything, this car is used for college age daughter to drive light duty.

I’m also going to replace both CV axles, probably with CVJ remans, as Toyota wants 550 for each side, good grief I’m not made of money!! Lol

If anyone knows of a good shop that does this kind of work(carrier/diff rebuilds)or any other suggestions I am open to any and all options.

Thanks all.

CVs are $440+/- at McGeorge which includes the new core charge.

Whats worn out in your front diff??

I’m guessing the carrier bearing. The Toyota dealer said to replace front diff.

The (complete, ready to bolt on) front diff is not that expensive. Check out partsouq.com

Thank you for your reply. So please correct me if I am mistaken, and I truly hope I am, but when I type this into McGeorge parts it looks to be the housing only, not the actual gear, pinion, etc... am I incorrect?

I don’t know how it is at McGeorge’s:( But this part number should be the complete assembly.

I’ll definitely look into this and I really appreciate the help.

I’ve took another look and uhm. This diff is actually for my 2000 diesel. The 2002 petrol one is out of stock at partsouq right now, and there is another part number for the petrol - notsure if this superseeds the original one or not, which costs $1700 ish. 411106A171.
Might need further investigation/asking around.
Sorry about that!

I just realized that about 5 minutes ago, bottom line is 2k delivered. That’s just more than I’m willing to spend. I’m hoping I can find some mine can rebuild or find a low mile unit.

It’s me again. So the first one (the cheaper one) seems to be the 4pin diff, and the other one (more expensive) the 2pin diff. The final drive ratios are also different.
if I interpret correctly, then the 2002.08+ (5spd) petrol uses the same diff as my 2000 4spd diesel, however a 2002.08-(4spd) petrol uses the more expensive one.

Just get a locker (air or electric) and a bearing kit and rebuild it yourself, or have a shop rebuild it. Point is, for similar money, you get a stronger carrier and more functionality to boot.

Did you check wheel bearings? They can make a noise that might sound like a bad carrier bearing

I had the dealer check and it’s definitely the front carrier, I put it on my jack stands as well and confirmed. The fluid looks like diesel oil.

Just rebuilt mine in my 2000 with Nitro gears in stock 4:30 ratio. $750 for the gearset and $450 for the rebuild at a reputable shop. Did the R+R myself, so can't say what labor is for removal and reinstall. 4:30 OEM front diffs new online are $2000+, and the shipping is not cheap.

Why is it better/more expensive than the FGR=41:10=4.100 one?

Gatormark91, thanks for the reply! In all my years of driving I’ve never had to have any front or rear diff work. When looking for a shop that rebuilds diffs what kind of shop does this kind of work? An axle shop? Transmission shop?

4:10 or 4:30 are the stock gears depending on year. Early 4 speed models have 4:30s, later 5 speed models have 4:10s. This is important if your are not regearing the rear diff, since you need to match stock gear ratios front to back.
