Wooden dash trim

Made these the other day and couldn't wait to post a few pictures. I may make another set in Teak, and turn a shift knob to match as well. It all depends on time for now I guess. I'll try to get some pictures of them installed later. Just out of curiosity, if I were to make a batch of these, would anyone be interested in buying them? I could make them out of just about any wood you wanted. These are from a weird piece of maple I picked up last fall. The figure makes it look like it's melting in places. Not quite curly, not quite tiger, not really birds-eye. Just strange.http://images.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks! I'm just about to graduate with a BFA in woodworking and furniture design, so hopefully it will be my trade soon. It's going to be hard leaving behind all the beautiful machines we have at school for some crappy portable table saw in my back yard though.

Just installed this afternoon... It's kind of a gloomy day, so lighting is less than ideal. I'll try to get some better photos when the weather clears. I need to adjust the fit of the driver's side a bit, but they look pretty good. I'm thinking about making a pice that blanks out the radio as well, or possibly even one solid piece that goes the length of the dash. Expansion and contraction becomes an issue then, however.​

The thing I can't decide on is whether or not to hide the hardware, or keep it decorative, an opinions?Better pictures will come soon.​

The wood looks a bit lighter than it actually is.

It's almost always more elegant to hide the hardware, at least in high end cabinet-making where I (used to) come from. Not always easy though.

If it was me I'd hide the hardware. And from the looks of them in the wide shot I think it would be really nice with one continuous piece across the dash like you mentioned. Good stuff!

Koa and I'm in for a set.Hide the fastners for sure.Turn matching knobs for the whole dash and I think you could make some $$$ and more importantly...a lot of people happy.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! I'm going to try to make another set with hidden hardware next week, or possible one that spans the whole dash. I'm honestly not sure what to charge for these if anyone wants a set, or if I'm going to have time to make them right now. A lot of the cost would depend on what kind of wood you wanted. It also starts to get tricky if everyone wants a completly different wood I'll keep track of how long it takes me to make the second set and try to come up with a price then. Thanks again!

I'm still working on a version with hidden hardware, as well as one that spans the entire dash. It's going slowly at the moment as I am neck deep in my senior thesis, and the 40 has been in the shop for a week or so. Hopefully I'll have the new ones done in a few weeks. I'll try to post some progress pictures soon. Thanks again for all your comments!

What size stock do you start with?

I have a lot of White Oak, Red Oak, Black Walnut, Black Walnut w Burl, Cherry and Eastern Red Cedar and some Bass Wood. Basswood is to soft but the rest would look cool depending on the color of you rig.

Santos mahogany wood floors

I am currently working on installing some santos mahogany floors on my 70 fj55. I will do the back floor, the tail gate and the back of the fold down seat. I have access to all kinds of exotic woods, and since you showed me a new idea i might just become a copy cat, or I will the dash out of fiber glass.
