I've got to get my wife a mountain bike for Christmas and have have no idea what to get her. Is it really necessary to have to buy a women's bike? I know it might be need for a ten speed but most mountain bikes the upper tube seems lower anyway. Is it just the seat that is different and if that's the case I can just go buy one of those. Looking for something under 200 since I really doubt she will ride it much. She goes through phases and this is one. Trying to find something used in my area that would fit the bill. Just don't know what to start looking for. Thanks.

i brought me a haro mountain bike for around 1000 dollars and the wife just had to have one also so she got a trek and it only cost 600 dollars and it looks good hanging from the ceiling in the garage. only rode it a couple of times maybe 1 hr total. hell but it looks good hanging. just go to walmart they have plenty and they are low cost and are good enough to ride until she gets past this phase in her life. then we can swap hanging pictures. no its not just the seat the bar on her bike is lower plus her seat is wider fits better

Hey man I bought my girl a specialized Safire back when I bought it it was around 2200 that's been several years ago so price on a used one would be under that for sure. She loves it a lot and actually I didn't think she would get hooked on MTB but she rides almost every weekend. The design of the bike is women specific and it's pink .

The mountain bikes in that price range aren't usually women's specific in the same ways that higher end bikes are. The less expensive bikes all have comfortable seats, low top tubes and rise bars. Some are offered in a classic "ladies frame" with a step over top tube.

If you were willing to pony up a couple hundred more you can get this. Entry level Trek 820 WSD - Women's - Trek Bicycle

when comparing a bike like this to a piece of s*** Walmart special be sure to keep in mind resale value and SAFETY! A name brand bike purchased a real bike shop will be assembled by a qualified bicycle mechanic and will be the correct size. Add to that the fact that the shop will spend a little time making small adjustments during the sale that make a BIG difference in comfort. For example, seat height and angle, the position and height of the stem, bars, brake levers and shifters. These are little things that could make the difference on weather or not your wife actually rides the bike. Anyone is more likely to actually ride a bike that shifts well, brakes safely and easily and is comfortable to ride. Also, you will have the support of a bike shop during ownership. A free check over and a quick tune every year is essential. (At my shop we give free lifetime tune ups with every bike we sell and yes, I do the same exact tune that normally cost $70). Not all bike shops are created equal so be sure to not just find the best deal but also a shop that treats you with respect and gives you attention no matter how much you are spending.

I guess I just hate hearing the "go to Walmart" thing. Those bikes are the equivalent of booty fab steering on a clapped out rig. I see it all the time and ALL those bikes are sketchy at best.

I can guarantee she will only ride the Wallmart/Target bike a couple of times and hate it. Rant over - Good luck

First off, how tall is she, taller women fit mens bikes fine. $200 aint gonna get you much.

first of all if you read the post he said she most likley wont ride it she is going thru a phase so why spend a ton of money. i dont like walmart either but for a bike to ride around the block WHO CARES

Unless she will be riding in a skirt, there's no reason to buy a "ladies" frame -- i.e. one with parallel down and top tubes. Just get a bike with a good (read: "men's") frame design that fits her height.

$200 will find a decent name-brand used mountain bike on Craigslist. Find something in the right size range and give it a tune-up and a good cleaning.

I would go with whatever frame is about the right size, regardless of what gender it is marketed towards.

Haros suck. Hang it up and ride the trek

At 5'8" she should fit a mens large frame fine. Might have to shorten the stem a bit, but the standover height should be good.

5'8", inseem must be about 34 inches, right, large Cannondale standover at center of top tube is 31.5 inches. Umm a small frame. Medium maybe. Large is more like it.

Shes not going to use it as a dildo, tardy3.

You want much more standover on mtb than on a road bike. I'm 5'10 and a large would be way too big for me.

When riding a road bike worry about top tube length not seat tube.
