im trying to wire up the tail light i bought got my
75 fj40. all the wiring i have done myself from scratch with the help of some friends.
my problem is that with the way i have it (cause i don't know any better :bang:) my brake light is wired directly to a fused wire from the battery. and my steering column is supplied from a different fused supply from the ignition (toggle switch). ANYWAYS. the brake lights and the turn signals work but when m on the brakes i turn signal doesn't work. it seems like it isn't over riding the signal?:wrench: im not sure which is why im here.
if someone can help me out with info or a diagram it would be much appreciated.:meh:
thank you

Have you got the toyota tail lights, or other? Toyota has a different bulb for the signal then the stop. The old american way, or trailer type lights use the same filiment/bulb for stop and signal. Did you rewire this method?

The 78 is a two bulb system where the brakes and turn signals are separate.
Are you wiring a single bulb or two bulb setup? Sounds like single from your description.
If it's single then I believe that your brake light power has to run to the turn signals so that the turn signal switch can disable the power to one of the brake lights when the turn signals are on. Otherwise you won't see the turn signals when the brakes are on (which is what you are seeing).

I should mention that I just went through the same thing when I used cheap american lights for my 78. I ended up buying a $25 conversion module that enabled me to wire my five wire toyota harness (less reverse) to four wire tail lights.

i forgot to mention that i have aftermarket L.E.D lights.
3 wire. white is ground. brown is running light and green is turn and brake.
and i have a late 80's chevy steering column.

do you have a flasher installed sounds like you don't and since you have led your gonna need a electronic flasher. where in so cal are you?

Chevy steering column, aftermarket lights, home brew wiring. What does this have to do with the FJ40?;)

i do have the correct flasher installed. im not sure if i have to supply the power to my brake switch through my steering column?

and i grew up in pomona. but im in norcal now

I appreciate the link steve. but as of now it doesnt help.
according to painless i should have a white wite in my column
which is the missing link i need between my switch and my tail lights.
i just ran out and tore my column apart and i dont have the white wire or any signs of it ever being there.

If you have the stock flasher, it relies on resistance to flash, so with LEDs it won't flash. You need a solid-state flasher.
