I'm not much of a wiring guru. I'm replacing my left/right tail lights with single LEDs that have 3 wires capable of tail, stop and turn.

The instructions for the LED say turn/stop go to RED, WHITE is ground and BLACK is tail.

Currently I have it wired up as follows:

WHITE LED WIRE - One of the white ground wires out of 3
RED LED WIRE - stop + turn wires
BLACK LED WIRE - tail wire

Whenever I press the brake down the turn light in the front also lights up. It seems to be sharing the signal with the brake since I connected them together on the RED LED Wire. What am I doing wrong :frown: ? Do I need some special switch to get this to work right?

Thanks!

That tail light is not truly compatible with the 80 as it has separate turn signals (3 channels) , you could put 2 diodes on the stop and turn inputs to keep them from seeing each other but an easier approach may be to tie into the trailer wiring, the converter box for the trailer has already done this conversion to 2 channels per side instead of the 80's 3.

You could also use relays.

it seems to me that a diode is required to prevent the brake light current from travelling to the front flashers. Install diode in the turn wire before the connection with the brake wire.

Arya- I believe the electronic flasher is necessary for when LED turns prevent a normal flasher from operating correctly. This may well be the case, but I do not think it is the solution for the problem stated above.

I wouldn't place any bets on the correctness of this information. Surely someone else will have a more decisive opinion.

I've never messed with LEDs, but have read tons of posts about them. What I meant by electronic flasher is a trailer wiring conversion. Essentially LEDs work like trailer lights, so you need to convert the factory system over to a 4 wire system. I suppose you could also just tap off of your trailer wiring harness if you were so inclined. The "electronic flasher" I was speaking of will slow down the rate of flash of the turn signal which I have a feeling you will find as your next problem.

BTW, how are you mounting these LEDs? Should be interesting to see.

Wow you guys are amazing! 5 replies in 15 minutes...Thanks!! :bounce2:

I'm gonna tie into the trailer wiring to keep it simple. I'll let everyone know how it works out. My TJM bumper may use the trailer wiring so it should be easy to tie into that.

I just finished some rear armor panels for my 80. I'll try to take some pics tonight or tomorrow. I'm integrating an oval LED.

Thanks again everyone. I tied into the trailer wiring and it works great!

Here's a quick shot of my armor plates. Last year Billings and 21 Road got the best of my panels. Plus my tail lights kept getting busted on stuff so I decided to beef it up back there.

See yall in Moab!

How far foreward does that diamond plate extend? It does look beefy, Nice work.

I definitely want to see some daylight shots of that armor. Who bent it for you? How expensive? I'm definitely interested in something like that for a future 80 project.
