Wiring for light trailer

So it has been a while since I posted (so long I am back to 1st post i guess). My cousin, bjordnolf in these parts, has been driving my 74 pig so I have not had a cause. In any case, he got his sweet 80 back so now I have the beat-up pig back. I just welded on a cheap hitch to pull a light trailer but cant fin anywhere tips on wiring a trailer up. Any ideas would be great, or even just point me to a search that would help.

Depending on how far you want to take it you can go the easy probably will quit working when it gets wet route and use the clamp on wire splices for each of the wires or you can cut/strip solder and heatshrink a 4 wire trailer harness in. If it was mine I would consider putting a weatherpak connector close to the splice so when you have to replace the connector at the bumper you can just unplug it and replace it when it gets corroded too much. If I remember right the wires for the rear lights all come down the pass side frame rail so anywhere close to the back would be a good spot to tie in.
 
Cool, thanks for the help. I think I will put in a connecter. May as well splice i right as I have some heat shrink around. Glad you said the wires are on the passenger side as I was going to spend a hour searching the driver side in stead. For some reason I assumed it would be over there.
 
that's on my 76-ish. Hopefully it is the same for yours! Just check inside the frame rails on each side, it will be hard to miss. You will have to strip some of the tape off the wires but you should be golden.

It all depends on matching the type of wiring of the cruiser to the trailer. '74s have a "4 wire" light system where the brake and turn lights share the same filaments. If the trailier is also "4 wire" it is an easy matter to just tap into the cruiser wires. If the trailer has separate turn and brake lights ("5 wire") then you need to buy an converter to run it properly.

I have a 74' 40 and will be getting a trailer soon...probably with the 4 pin flat connector. I put one of those on my truck a while back when I tried to rent a trailer from Uhaul, and they tested it and it didn't illuminate the brake lights when pressing the brakes....turn signals and regular lights worked....he said I needed the converter to make it work...does that make sense, or did I just not do it correctly? Thanks guys...

It's a very easy fix. Buy a trailer wire converter. Takes your 5 wire impulses & converts them into 4 wires.

The converter wires are color coded... your yellow to the converters yellow, the converters yellow to the trailers yellow, your green to etc. etc.

Buy the converter @ Wally, Napa etc. $20-30. Easy install...less than an hour.
