Okay, I've studied the wiring diagram, traced out connections, checked grounds and fuses and I sitll can't figure this one out.

Here's the symptoms, they're odd...

Basically the turn signals don't blink, only come on once with a single click of the flasher.

Ignition off: Parking lights all come on like normal and are bright.
Ignition off: Brake lights work, no affect on others.
Ignition off: Hazard flashers work normally and flash. (hazards use the turn signal flasher by the way)

Ignition ON: Parking lights work normally.
Ignition ON: Brake lights work normally.
Ignition ON: Hazard flashers work normally.
Ignition ON: Turn signals come on, all lamps light up including the indicators on the dash but do not flash. They just come on with one cycle of the flasher relay and stay on.

I referred to the Haynes manual, pg. 215 I believe for my wiring diagram. 1972 FJ40. It represented the features of my wiring perfectly and most clearly. The Toyota diagrams in the service manuals were too small to read and not as clear as the Haynes.

I pulled the turn signal plug into the wiring harness and used a short piece of wire to short the connections and get the same results, so the turn signal switch is not the problem.

Anyhow, I need some electrical-type person to tell me where to look now. It seems that the turn signal wiring goes through the hazard switch. I'm not sure where to look now.

Could someone please help me with ANY ideas on where to look?

Ha! You must be over 40 y/o. Are your arms too short, too?

I admit this is a major PITA even with a legible wiring diagram. It is a major spaghetti network. I ended up just trying different wire combinations until I got it right. There are A LOT of permutations.

Ok Outback, here ya go. Had the same problem on my 40 after I put it all back together after body work/paint. My symptoms were exactly the same except the right side turn signal worked ok all the time. The left one would come on, light on dash would come on for one cycle sometimes, and the left side bulbs would not. First re-check your grounds, especially at the fenders. I had to run a new ground wire on both sides from the reflector inside the signal housing to the frame. Secondly, on the turn switch itself, I had a cold solder joint on the printed board that controlled the left side. I removed the entire switch (pretty easy, just pull the steering wheel and column cover), cleaned all the contacts in the switch, then tried to resolder the bad connection. This didn't work, but after taking an awl I was able to regain contact for the left side by pressing into the backside of the solder joint until the wire made better contact. It's only a temporary solution as every 6 mos or so I have to pull the wheel and press on the connection again, but it works. May not be your solution, but worth looking into as I too had good power when checking the switch from the harness. If you're not clear on this, I can try and make up a diagram on what I did. Just let me know.

Rob

Thanks for the info Rob, I'll check the grounds again.

Unfortunately I have an early steering column and not as you described. Like I stated above, I can short the plug conections and get the same results w/o the switch. I plan to pull my switch and see anyhow though.

Jody.

Have you tried a new flasher? Do they work OK with tail/park lights off (if so, look for a grounding problem)?
