I have a 1982 BJ 42.....I am hooking up a trailer with a.... ( curt 5 to 4 ) converter. I do not know what the TRUCK color codes, green, green\white,
green\yellow, white\black, red\black refer to.....?
I know white\black is ground......
Any one know where I can get exact color codes to match the .......white, brown, yellow, green of the Curt converter?
Thank you for all your advice and suggestions

thank you....
also, what would be the wires that connect, to do the ( curt 5-4 converter ) if you know...?

Personally if you plan to tow regularly would use a kit that has a separate wire run to the battery. Fuse inline so any shorts in the trailer will not harm the vehicle wiring. Will also not cause flashers to operate faster or lights to dim. As for which wire O would just use a meter at the plug for the tail lights to figure it out. Pretty simple wiring. All the fifth wire come from the brakes. Right turn signal, left turn signal, tail light, brake light, ground. Trailer wiring on a four pin does not have a separate brake light, it combines it with the turn signal.

If you will post the model # of the Curt converter I will tell you how to connect it. Hook up directions should be printed right on the converter?

If this is not a powered converter, be prepared for dim trailer lights. The cheaper non-powered converters use diodes to form the interface. The diodes have voltage drop across them so you will get dimmer than normal trailer lights.

The Curt 56146 or the Curt 56496 will do the job. I prefer the 56496 as it it truly waterproof while the 56146 is water resistant. Either of these has to be connected directly to the battery to provide power. Using either of these converters allow the trailer lights will be as bright as possible since they are NOT using the FJ40 wires to provide power to the trailer bulbs, but instead use power straight from the battery through relays in the converter.

hello...
thank you for getting back
this is the model..... The issue I have is not the wiring connections from the trailer to the truck...
It is the wiring harness color code that goes from the truck to the curt convertor.....
I can get running lights, and have tried different patterns of connections......with not complete success...

also......when i got the curt...
there is one very long green wire...? what is that for, and why so long, is it to go directly to the battery...?

FYI this is not the type designed for the separate power from the battery. That would have another wire just for that. Would also have a fuse holder for that wire.

so my question is.....
what is the color codes of the wires in the truck harness?......I listed the colors on the first post..
I have tried combinations and they get all crossed.....I think that maybe other colored wires were added at some time.
I am not the greatest 12 volt guy.....but, thank you for your input, will use it to get me through it

Connect as follows:
Truck Wire ColorConverter Wire Color
Green (Park/Tail)Brown
Green/White (Brake) Red
Green/Yellow (Right Turn) Yellow
Green/Black (Left Turn)Green
White/Black (or ground to frame)White

@Coolerman, do you offer some type of plug and play adapter for the Curt 56496? Wiring those things should be pretty easy, but just wondering. I thought I remember reading something about it once.

ok.....last question...
in the harness of the truck.....there is a RED/black wire.......where does that go..?

Yes, the wiring of the curt is not the issue........it is what wires in the truck harness go to the curt...?
I know white/black is the ground and green yellow is signal/brake.....green/white is signal brake....brown is running lights....
but I have a RED/black .......? and another solid Green.......?
I can now get running lights and brake lights.......

Removed it all and need to figure out what is with all these wires. Blue and red wire in there.

Back where there tapped in for the right turn signal I found a crimp connector for the wire wire.

It had this rubber cap and yellow electric tape covering it. Seen yellow electric tape on a harness before.

Since I plan on pulling a small trailer debating using the same male/female connectors as used for tail lights or tapping into the harness and solder the connections.

Now to figure why all the odd colors in the harness across the back. Everything points to this be the original wiring.

Have a 3/79 that after twenty years I finally taking a closer look at. Think I remember seeing trailer wiring. Took a closer look to find this.

Your "before" photos are better than what someone did to my FJ40 back in the day. I've got it cleaned up now but don't really want to splice in something new...

I've cruiser that are hacked up much worse. This one they at least didn't cut and wire nut any wires. Overall pretty happy with the wiring on this one. Remember shortly after I bought it had to straighten out a few things under the hood. My 70 had to solder and shrink tape wires to clean up the trailer wiring mess. Used bullet connector from Mark @Coolerman to add a flat four pin trailer light plug. Want to remove it just undo the connectors.
