The wipers worked when I bought this 71 fj40 but after a wheeling trip when I had the window folded down they stopped. Upon inspection I noticed what seems to be an exposed contact and possibly missing cover on the motor itself.

Besides there being and possible break in the wire or bad switch (which I'll test for shortly) is there anything about this picture that looks other than stock (missing something)????

Thanks in advance.

By the way, anyone have a good wiring diagram they could email me? The Hayes manual is impossible to read the colors on the wire. FSM???

Thanks, Dan

Yes you are missing the little plastic cover...

Have ran mine that way since 1988....Works fine...

Good luck!

those contact are what make the wipers return up when you turn them off. there is a pin that runs on a gear inside the motor that makes contact when the blades are not at the top. when i was rebuilding mine i took them off. it still works it just stay where you put it when you turn them off

According to DaTracta I'm screwed but the rest of you seem like it is nothing. Do I believe poser with 3K+ posts or Datracta with a mighty 1???????

Guess its a coin toss since I know squat. Thanks for the input, I'll trouble shoot the circuit and hope for the best.

Dan :D

Check your connections and use some fine sandpaper on the contacts. I took my wiper motor apart including that, and rebuilding it gives a whole new look at what the Japanese were thinking when they designed them. They love grounding circuits, where the switch grounds a circuit rather than sending power to it. The little rubber dust boot is the only thing gone, other than that it looks alright, just touch up the connections. Make sure the pin with the red cap on it that shoves the paddle out can move freely and isn't stuck or anything. I replaced all of my connectors when I restored mine, used Deutsch connectors (expensive but military grade and well worth it) because 30+ year old connectors are not in the best of shape...

Actually, now that I look at it, carefully take the pieces off, noting which one goes where. If you can't remember just ask and I'll explain... but check the bakelite and see if anything is cracked or such, and that everything that is supposed to be insulated is.

I said you must replace the fuse... how did I say your screwed... fuse, little glass tube.

I just added a lil not that the drive gear is a plastic gear that wears with time. you cant find replacements, so I had my dad cut me a new metal one, not easy.
