My '18 LX570 needs to have its front wipers replaced. Not sure if I should replace just the inserts or the entire blade assembly. Also, I'm inclined to stay with OEM, but I've done ok with Bosch replacements on previous LX470.

What's the correct answer?

I use the replacement rubber portions. I read that the original wipers are much higher quality than the replacements available from mr. T.

Toyota sells non-OEM wiper blades at their dealer parts departments. Ironically with a toyota logo right on top.. but no logo for real OEM wipers.

So make sure you actually have OEM before you buy inserts otherwise they won’t fit.

I just got rid of those blades for OEM and am super happy with how they work. Plus now I can spend $8 on inserts/refills in the future.

Much more info (and part numbers for inserts) here: New Wipers OE vs Aftermarket

How challenging is the process of replacing just the inserts?

I have been replacing wiper blades since 1968 and I have finally come to believe that it just doesn’t matter which one you buy. I’ve seen blades with airfoils, double blades, rainx, rubber wraps, silicone infusion and plain, old rubber. I’ve tried metal blades and plastic and inserts the same and shepard hooks and bayonet mounts just to name some of the variations.
Now I go to the dealer for service and tell them that my wipers need replacement. I don’t know or care what they do but I’m just as happy with the result as I have ever been.
And I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest.

In the linked thread I detailed the differences between OEM 200 wipers and the cheaper ones being installed by dealers unless you specify OEM. They are still pretty good.. but not as solid as original, and not as solid as the 200 over all. The only performance difference so far is less chatter.

But again.. with OE blades you can install inserts and keep it true original quality for very cheap.

I suspect the dealers retail the sightlines due to profit motive. They aren’t as costly as OEM blades and even quicker to change (and more profit) than OE inserts.

I just put Bosch Icons on in snowy Boston.

The Toyota blades that were on there were squeeking and making me crazy. They weren’t that old... the Bosch are silent! 3 minutes of work.

I agree with others: the OEM seem to be better than the off the shelf stuff. Denso makes the OEM ones.

You can get a blade refill "kit" here: 2008-2019 LAND CRUISER Front and Rear Wiper Inserts NEW Genuine Toyota OEM | eBay

If you want to go after the refills individually these are the part numbers. 85214-31010, 85214-06140, 85214-0T040

I'm giving some PIAAs a spin. Rumor is that silicone blades last longer and are quieter in the long run. Also these have vents to minimize wiper lift under heavy wind. I didn't do the rear yet. We'll see how it goes and if they are better than OEM. I have my doubts. Might just be marketing... They aren't cheap either. Then again, the Denso blade isn't either. Refills are the way to go for OEM, much cheaper.

So easy a caveman can do it. I buy the inserts from Amazon for my other Toyota vehicles and replace them in less than 5 minutes.
Changed my inserts...just like a caveman woulda done. Biggest issue was figuring out how to release the blade. Once it was out, no problem.

Ive got a 1973 FJ40 and just bought refills at NAPA #6-1544 They are 15" long so you need to insert them then cut the rubber off with a utility knife and then you sanp the plastic end off. Works for me. $8 for both inserts.

Last winter I broke one of my OEM Front WS Wipers when my windshield was coated with ice and I got a little too aggressive with ice removal. The plastic blade has a small Toyota Logo which broke off. Now my blades need to be replaced too (including rear).

Are the part #'s below for the rubber blade inserts only?

Does anyone have part # for entire blade?

Check out the thread that @bloc posted earlier. This gets discussed often.

Tip for changing blades: I always start the process by laying a heavy towel or blanket down at the base of the windshield before removing the blade from the arm. I remember once watching someone changing blades and they accidently let the arm smack down on the windshield without a blade. Yup, broke the windshield. Expensive oops...

OEM refills are inexpensive and of very high quality... AND from my experience the after market replacements (Bosch, etc) do not contour the windshield the way the OEM ones do...but maybe I'm just super anal about small details like that. I live in Texas, where it doesn't rain much (well in Austin) Houston gets plenty and they don't dry rot as quickly as other brands I've used

Same part numbers as a landcruiser.

To be clear though, the toyota inserts will not work unless you have OEM wiper blades, which dealers are usually NOT installing. They are putting on a toyota branded aftermarket version that isn't as good and doesn't accept OEM inserts.

my drivers side is OEM, passenger side toyota branded non OEM - my replacement blade won't fit on that side. Frustrating since they look the same with subtle differences.

Not sure about the rear, probably OEM but haven't tried yet.

Anyone know how to order an OEM complete assembly?

How did those PIAA's work out (vs Bosch and OEM inserts)?
