Winter tire recommendations?

I see all you guys who get real winters still suggest the BFG ATs -- is it the extra weight of the Land Cruiser + full time 4wd that makes them decent for you?

I never liked them personally because everyone and their brother runs them and what others told me about their experience, so I never joined the club. I'd say 2/5 of the people I know who have them, said they hydroplaned on water and/or slipped on ice at some point in ownership, even when they were at mostluy full tread...and this for CA winters where we don't get real weather. I always thought it was because they were relatively hard compound (to wear like iron) and lacked clear pathways for water to exit the tread. In all other terrain I can see them being great.

Never had any issues with my Duratracs, hope to get the same performance from my Wildpeak AT3Ws, so far so good.
Now in Oklahoma, we don't get "real winters", but Ive experienced plenty of winter driving in both versions of BFG at's (KOs & KO2s) on multiple vehicles. Ran 3 different sets of KOs on my 1999 Toyota 4Runner - the KOs would slip every now and then on the ice/snow, but never to where I was put out of control, and I will say that I did hydroplane once with them, though honestly I shouldn't have been on the road. Then came the KO2s on my 1999 3/4T Dodge Truck-even with the gobs of torque from the diesel engine I could barely make them slip when wet. Tons of winter driving in that truck and the KO2s are amazing. Same here with my LX. I think the compounding and design on the KO2s is way better than the KOs, which shows in the snow/ice/wet conditions.

Just got a set of General Grabber Arctic 265/65R-18 for my '03. They ride great so far, and I've had an excellent experience in the past with General winter tires.

I run Nokian Hakappelitta 8 SUV Sudded on Tundra steel 18" wheels. 275/65/18, just one size up from the original 275/60/18. Nothing fancy, does the job really well up here where I am.

For those who are looking for a good all-arounder, the OEM Michelin LTX M/S tires that originally came with my truck did well in the winter, so good that I didn't need a dedicated snow tire. So good I bought a second set after I ran a set of Cooper H/T's which got me stuck in two inches of snow. They also performed better than the Cooper WeatherMaster studded tires I had for those winter years.
