Windshield replacement - does LC200 have pop rivets?

My friend has a 100 and said I should ask you all of the pop rivets is an issue with 200s?

i am having windshield replaced and he says I should be focused on that.

There are some rivets that hold trim clips, but they aren’t typically damaged. The white plastic clips themselves can get brittle though, and if the installer doesn’t know the land cruiser 200 well, they should probably expect to damage the black aluminum trim that runs vertically over either side of the windshield.

Be very careful who does the install. Toyota uses spacers to bring the windshield out to meet the rubber gaskets. Safelite does not do that and air leakage is a big problem. Get a Pilkington or OEM other stuff is crap. The trim as mentioned can get bent up in the process and in some cases need replacing? The point is to go to someone who has done it before.

Guys, need to get windshield replaced...yes (sigh...) using safe-lite as (in my area) recommend by dealer (thats where they send their work) and I had a positive experience (same shop) w a 100 series replacement.

My question is that the quote I got mid last summer (couldn't make time to get scheduled) was $350 - now on line quoted at $475. are these increases what other are seeing?

This will be first wind shield experience w this 200, any tips/hacks from anyone?

Totally "get" the bad experiences many have had. No other option. And as said, they did a good job on my 100 (dif config yes) and, like any franchise, there are good ones and otherwise. They've "done" quite a few of the 200s.

So, other than my vendor choice, any feedback on recent pricing and/or hacks while getting a new windshield?

I don’t quite understand “no other option”. There is literally no one else that installs windshields? Just because the dealer uses them doesn’t mean they are the best. If it’s an insurance issue I’d rather pay out of pocket to use a good installer (full cost if I had to, let alone paying price difference) than risk a s***ty safelite install allowing leaks that can kill any of the dozen or so modules under the dashboard. Or like mine where the damn thing whistled on the freeway because the installer used incorrect upper trim, didn’t attach the side trims correctly so they were bent and crooked, etc.

I ordered the part to Lexus of Austin and am waiting for it to be delivered. If you go there PM me I was referred to a service tech at Lexus who was super helpful by someone on this board.

The biggest being the gasket, that he recommends NOT using the new one, that unless properly warmed and "spread out" would present problems. And that (he says he uses Plinkington) the new windshield more than likely be a different dimension and thickness (yet, want to reuse the old gasket). He then went on to say I might want to go to the dealer and get Toyota glass and have them install it.

The Safelite manager, on the other hand, knows the LandCruiser (or at least answers all my questions). One of our boys, a dealer (not Toyota) GM, also uses SafeLite for overflow jobs (he has a guy that comes to him for most windshield work).

End of the day, SafeLite or otherwise, if an installer knows the vehicle and follows the procedure correctly isn't that the crux of the issue? So how do I vet the SafeLite guy? I guess I could ask for references right? Has anyone ever confirmed who actually makes the Toyota/Lexus glass?

AGC makes Lexus and Toyota front/rear glass. Stamped on both my 14 LX and 20 Cruiser. Nippon safety appears to make door glass.

I purchased OEM from Lexus for my 570 for the 4th windshield. Used their recommended installer which was not Safelite and it looks identical to the new 2020.

Some Safelite horror photos on my 4Runner. Rust from a previous Safelite install. Fought them and they covered $3000 in body work.

Wow...tough pics to see! Any idea if AGC windscreen is available through non dealer sources? The Lexus dealer where the truck is now, uses SafeLite (they are a pretty good dealer - Platinum/elite and GM is head of the Lexus dealer council).

That’s the issue.. I don’t know of a way to do that. The manager knowing the vehicle is one thing, but that simply may mean he’s training a new guy on yours.

At the end of the day safelite markets itself as a budget/convenience option. The 5-minute oil change shop of auto glass. Most vehicle owners would never be able to tell the difference between a pro install and a crap one, and they take advantage of that fact.

Doing the work to find an independent installer with a great reputation specifically because he/she takes pride in their work and maybe caters to upper scale vehicles (and likely costs more) will most likely reduce the risk of getting the safelite treatment.
