Buddy has a 2005 LX with Night Vision option. New crack in windshield necessitates replacement at a stunning cost of $1800 for the glass! Has anyone found a cheaper alternative or is OEM Lexi glass the only alternative for Night Vision?

Having the night vision makes the window pretty specific. I'm not positive, but I think all the aftermarket replacements do not have the NV screen.

I take a 8"X10" peice of cellophane and stick it to my windshield, I can have night vision too. Or atleast make it look like I do.

I had my non-night vision windshield replaced 3x in Oct '06, Oct '07, and Oct '08 (do you see a pattern here?). The first time, it was $1K out the door. The second time, same parts, same dealer, same SM, but $1.25K out the door. Third time, same parts, same dealer, same SM, but $1500 out the door! The price of the glass alone increased $300 each year!

I would think that your insurance company would cover the cost of the replacement windshield??

He just changed coverage to save money!

Some more info fwiw. First, I was curious if the difference b/w night view windshield and non night view windshield was speculation or fact. I checked FSM and couldn't find any indication that the windshield would be different - clearly there are additional parts, but I would think they're not different than the rain sensor and I saw some people point out the rain sensor is not in the window, it's a module added to the window.

So I checked parts sites to see if there's a separate part for NV vs. non NV and there is in fact a separate part number. On Lexuspartsnow.com, 56111-60581 is the Rain Sensing Non Night View part number and costs $960, whereas 56111-60640 is the Rain Sensing AND Night View part number and costs $1430.

Perhaps your buddy would do better ordering the window himself and bringing it somewhere to have it installed? Two things to point out:
1) Apparently LC/LX Windows take training and expertise to install correctly
2) It is clear from the FSM that setting up Night View correctly is not trivial. Looks like even if he found someone to install the windshield, he would want the Night View calibrated or setup correctly as well...

People talk about the Night View windshield costing 2 to three times as much, but I can see the part itself is only ~500 more - I'm guessing it's the added labor of reinstalling and setting up NV that adds so much more to the expense.

Good thoughts agaisin. I hand't even considered that they may need to refocus the NV head.

What's ironic is that Lexus of Portland won't do the install for him. They'll sell him the glass and recommend a shop, but they don't want to do the install. It's the 2nd time this particular vehicle has had it's NV windshield replaced (first was the PO, his dad). He's taking it to the same shop so I'm assuming it's a quality place. The $1800 might be the installed price, we were speaking in generalities regarding the repair.

Knock on wood, I've never had a windshield crack on me!
