My drivers side window would not role up more than about 2 inches. I pulled up and pushed down a few times and got it loose. Does any body know what causes this and how hard it is to fix?

This all happened on Monday which turns out be the rainiest day on record in Seattle.

You need a new window regulator.

Possibly yes, however it could be that the roller/window was only bound up.

Pull the door inner panel, then the moisture barrier, off, and use a small mirror if needed to inspect the regulator and window tracks. It even could be a problem w/ the moulding in the upper portion of the door, inside the door frame where the window rides. However, it's likely related to the regulator or tracks.

Not a 60 but....

On my fj62 the drivers window had the same problem. Got jammed up about 4 inches up and would not go any higher. Turns out the window guide/track on the front side has a rubber seal which the window travels between to keep it lined up/sealed and from rattling. Mine had popped out and threw my window off track hitting part of my regulator. I pulled the rubber seal all the way out and it is working fine. I am going to order a new seal soon, but its just fine for now. Hope this helps

x2 on being off track. Take the panel off the inside of the door, then roll it all the way down. Look inside from up top. You can then reach inside and looking down see an aluminum strip to your right. Pull the glass from the whole in the door and then get it in that track. Assuming it's that, it's what I used to have to do to mine. Good luck. By the way the panel is easy to remove

Was it getting hard to roll up before hand or did it just all of the sudden stop working? I recently replaced my regulator but it was on the way out for a while. Very easy to do but I accidently destroyed my moisture barrier / inner door "seal".

Where did you get the rubber piece? I need one too. It gets ridiculous having to pull that panel off all the time. THanks

Actually, I remember now that I had "difficulty" getting the handle off. Here are some pics that would have helped me. The PO had installled the snap ring wrong.

I also didn't read the FSM instructions correctly the first time for removing the actual window. Helps if you know how to read. But other than that, it was real easy.

Uhhh . . . Please elaborate . . .

It doesn't "feel" like a track problem. More like it just stopped dead as opposed to getting harder and harder to role up and then stopping.

This helpful. I was just searching for it.

Thanks

Umm, I may not be the best person to say how to do it, since I didn't do it the right way. When you take the door panel off, there is a blue plastic seal thing. You might have to carefully cut it to get to the access holes in the door and therefore have access to the regulator, window, etc. I, being a knucklehead, didn't think the blue plastic thingy was important and so kind of removed it because it was really in the way. Come to find out, it is what helps keep water from coming in through the door. I guess it is supposed to be somehow tucked in at the bottom to allow for proper drainage or something. Anyways, basic point is to try to preserve it as much as possible.

From experience ( that is, "Happened to me")
the bottom of the glass is 'pinched' in a metal frame that has a track for the regulator (lifting mechanism).

The metal frame had swollen from rust; the frame would interfere with the felt track that ends just below the door latch: windo would easily crank up 2.5 inches & stop - crank down just as easy....

You're problem is more than likely the regulator; but could be the glass frame :)

The window handle comes off real easy: use 'linen' (old sheet or under pants). Slide edge of linen under handle where you'd grab it; then under (or over, try one) the plastic 'washer'. pul;l linien up & down (like sawing). It will catch & dislodge a 'c' clip that keeps handle on regulator shaft.

The weather seal (plastic sheet) is stuck to door with a tar like material; you can carefully tease the plastic from the 'tar'. Aluminum foil type duct tape is a great fix if ya tear it....

Yeah, someone had cut mine partly already. Just reading the other thread, you don't want to cut. "Carefully remove ...." apparently is the way to go.

Rob,
To further elaborate, the moisture barrier will look similar to this:

Obviously, I was nearing the end of the replacement process, but imagine it cut to the contour of the line of black sealant.

What did you use for plastic and sealant?

Thanks,
Chad

Plastic was just some 2 mil( or thicker I think) drop cloth type stuff I had around, and the sealant was just black RTV adhesive.
Honestly, anything with more substance than a trash bag would do, as it's gonna be always protected w/ the panel.

hey rob,

i think i met you at my brother's house a few months back (my bro is lovestoski.) anyway... this happens to me on occasion with the front passenger window. i roll the window partially or all the way down and then it won't go back up. if i push the button up, then let go, then push the button down, then let go - and keep repeating this it eventually does go back up. just have to keep at it.

i actually havent ordered or looked for one yet. If you find where to get one,
let me know. I'll do the same if i come across some as well.

Sounds good! ready.........set........let me know where you find it. haha just kidding. I'll keep my eyes open too.

I had a similar problem. Could only roll it up a couple of inches. Turned out there is an L- shaped piece of metal that lies flat and seems to be attached to the lock mechanism.
The long metal channel that holds the glass was catching it as I rolled it up.

You have to take the whole thing apart, per everyone's comments above. While you are at it, take the window regulator out, clean it, put some while lithium grease on it. And add some lubricant to the rubber window channels.
