Gday,

Im slowly restoring a 78 FJ40 and am always after a good deal.
In my local paper (Australia), it has the following advertised for sale:

"Winch WARNER High Mount 8000lb, Good condition, Good Cable suit CJ jeep for sale: Aust $400."

As I dont know a great deal about winches, is Warner / short for warn, or a different brand altogether? Ive done a quick search on the net and havent found much.

Is an 8000lb rated winch enough for the odd recovery or two? nothing hard core.

An 8K winch is OK for your FJ40.

Warn is not "short" for WARNER. I have never heard of a WARNER winch but I don't live in OZ so take that for what its worth. That price sounds excellent for a Warn 8K winch, even in real US American dollars. :D

4 WHEEL PARTS HAD THOSE WARN 8000K FOR $550 OUT THE DOOR, WITH ROLLER FAIRLEAD. I GOT MINE FOR MY 40 BRAND NEW, SO IF ITS IN GOOD SHAPE, NOT A BAD DEAL .. ;)

GOOD LUCK ..

I'm pretty sure that WARN is not short for Warner, and that winch that you've found is a WARN knock off. I'm suspicious of any company that tries to feed off of the reputation of another. That being said, we have a lot of misspellings in our local papers. By your description, it could just be a used legitimate WARN winch.

A warn high-mount means that is a 8274 model winch.

This is not your average 8k pound winch, I would rather have an 8274 on my 40 than ANY OTHER electric winch, period.

If it is indeed an 8274 in good working condition, it is well worth $400.

Verify that it is indeed a Warn, and that it is a high-mount (look below) and that it works, and then buy it!

This is what one looks like-

Thanks for the replies! I bit the bullet and bought this winch on ebay. Everything works AOK, and parted around $300 US for it. Now after reading the the article on pirate, I might throw a seal kit in it, and clean it up / powder coat the exterior ect.......

You got a good deal.I have had the same for a long time and works great.Parts are everywhere and there are a few blokes around that modify the wiinch for comps eg waterproofing.
