My family told me today that they wanted to do something nice for since I am the family counselor(figuratively speaking.) They said they wanted to buy me a winch. I don't think I will let them because of the economy and I want them to hold on to their money. If they won't let it go then I have a choice to make. In the future I plan to get power steering. Maybe Saginaw. If I go the Saginaw route will the power steering get into the way? I would like to have the cable come through the bumper. I have noticed that the Warn M8374 seems to fit all the way to the passenger side leaving room for the power steering. I like the 9.4XP, 9.5ti Thermometric, XD 9000i and the M8274. I know absolutely nothing about winches besides what I had on my 4 wheelers and other hunting golf carts so this is new. What I named I just think looks good.

Warn 8274-50 is all you need to know about electric winches...

Why is the 8270-50 the winch to have. looks old and outdated to the others. It would seem that newer and better winches have been created.

Dude---Is a 40 old and outdated? How about 60? An 80?

The 8274 is stronger, faster, rebuildable, and fits with the usual saginaw power steering. It is the perfect winch for an FJ40.

Thank you. But in response to your first remark the 40 can't be replaced. there are no other vehicle like the 40 whereas there are several Warn winches that are comparable.

Pic of the front of my rig. This is what you're looking at spacewise with the Saginaw conversion. I plan to go with the 8274 and the fairlead through the bumper.

The 40 series has been replaced. Toyota introduced the FJ Cruiser....

Just because it is called a winch, even made by Warn, does not mean that it is comparable to the 8274.....

SEARCH!

Not just out here, but use an Internet search engine and READ about the 8274.

There is a reason why you will find that winch on the front of so many trucks. Not because it is cheap, not because everyone got a deal on it, not because someone told them it was cool to have.

Hands down, it is the best 8K# electric winch on the market, period.

Go off road with people that have them, and use them. Ask them why they do not have a different make/brand/style of winch on the front of their truck.

After you spend a day being a cable bitch on a ride, you will possibly begin to understand....

What kind of smoker do you have/use for your BBQ?

that's like replacing Jessica Alba with Rosanne Barr

I use Southern Pride smokers but I have a couple of custom smokers where I cook over charcoal and wood.

I have a milemarker hydraulic that fits with the saginaw power steering. Poser is correct about the 8274-50 it is by far the best choice. I got my winch from another cruiserhead and it was cheap. I still want the 8274-50

I just traded my xd 9000 for a 8274 and am installing tonight ans tomorrow. With the 8274 you can drop it down and run the cable through the bumper and still clear the saginaw box. I will post pics when i finish.

warn 8274

When I started reading about winches the 8274 came up over and over just like in this post. Although rated 8k many people say they actually pull better than a 9k.

I like it because of its reputation for reliability and it does not stick out like a sore thumb on a 30 year old vehicle. hmmm rugged and reliable and works better than the new stuff---sounds like a 40!:)

you can find deals on them if you are patient

According to a magazine article I read many years ago, given sufficient amperage to draw on an 8274 will consistently break its (stock) cable at 12000lbs+. One other winch the magazine tested (I don't remember which one) would stall the motor at about 9000lbs, none of the others would do more than about 7000-7500lbs. All of the test winches were rated at 8000lbs by their manufacturers. Wish I could remember the magazine and the issue number.

I have an 8274 (don't know the dash number, it's a 24V unit) on my BJ40 with Saginaw steering, there is no fitment problem.

should I go 12 or 24V?

That's kind of a strange question.

If your truck is wired for 24v, get a 24v winch. Otherwise get a 12v like the rest of us!
