I have my eye on a TJM 8000LBS electric winch and was wondering if anyone installed this thing using the stock bumper. I already bought a brand new front bumper and am willing to cut the old one to shreds if needed. Pic included and comments appreciated.

Really don't think it was designed as a load-bearing bumper.

I'm with Grandpa on this one. You can straighten a bent stock bumper by putting a chain on it and around a tree and backing up. Pretty sure this is a good sign not to mount a winch to it.

You could keep the stock bumper and make a mount for the winch that bolted to the frame and not the bumper. But you cant just mount the winch to the stock bumper.

I have seen this done before and it looks really good. Probably takes some welding skills to hide the bracketry behind the stocker though.

my winch(m12000) is on a mount attached to the frame, the stock bumper was cut to fit on/around the winch mount. i think i may have a pic.

as mentioned above, you cant mount a winch direct on the stock bumper.

I always wondered if one could use those 'universal' winch mounting plates and somehow get it bolted to the frame rails, then modify the front bumper with cutouts and such. I think the CCOT one for the fj40 is 28" across, and the 60 rails are wider, but maybe a longer plate can be laid across then attach the winch plate to that. What does anyone think? I just noticed MAF 4plus bumper went from $745 to over $900! Need cheap ideas...

Correction

Everyone thought i wanted to bolt the winch directly on the bumper :crybaby:, which wasn't what i meant, but i probably wrongly conveyed the message.

What i want to do is to mount the winch using brackets to the frame, and i need to see how this is done and what needs to be cut from the bumper to accomodate the winch & how far out will the winch protrude.
--Lost--, my man, would love to see those pictures ...!

I think a Heep Wrangler winch mount works you just have to change the holes. I think kling-on did it on his orange bobed rig, but not sure.

i know you said you got a spare bumper, but in my opinion the stock bumper doesnt cut the cheese for off-roading. looks ok but no practicality for off roading.
the pics doesnt show much but the bumper(and the valence and the fender) is all bent (from trail damage e.i hitting trees :P) i eventually plan on taking the bumber off and adding wings(?) the the winch mount to make a proper heavy duty bumber.

all the work for this mod was done by the PO
the stock bumper is still one piece, its just been cut to fir winch mount
for reference, its a warn m12000
