I bought a 5/16" x100' warn winch line for the PTO winch on my fj40; catalog states it was supposed to come with a loop thimble, but there wasn't any in the box or attached to it. Do I REALLY need it,,,or should I just call WARN and order a replacement. All the other 5/16" thimble's I've found in the local stores seem a little small for the size of this loop. Thanks.

Just so I understand, you ordered a line with a loop, it came with a loop but no "liner" for the loop? If so, please do not use the cable as is, as you risk damage to the loop. You should have received a liner for the loop. Do not accept mediocrity. Call and get what you paid for.

yes, you really need it.....protects the cable and helps prevent any kinking there

Out of curiousity, because I've seen more than one apparently OE cable lacking a thimble; directly off Warn's page:

Same with their extension cables:

But NOT with their synthetics:

I think it's a shame that they don't use them, but if the cable eye is already properly formed and the swage crimped in place you won't be able to insert the thimble anyway. And if it is not properly formed then it'll forever be falling out of the eye.

Thanks for the input, I'm calling WARN on Monday to DEMAND MY THIMBLE! I'll see if it fits correctly.

as posted above: if the thimble isn't there already, the only way to install it is to redo the swage-crimp (or I suppose add another crimp) else the thimble won't stay in.

You'll have to send the cable back or live without the thimble (or buy swage crimp equipt).

...can I use a u-bolt or two to cinch the thimble in the loop end?

I've never tried it, might work, and would certainly be less hassle then sending it back.
If it were me, I'd probably want it done "right"- I don't know what kind of forces would be on the ubolt (winch repair clamp thingy) ie: I don't know if it would be dangerous or not. Hopefully somebody more versed in these things will chime in

Yes, but that is really only a 'getcha back', not a permanent fix. There are also good and bad ways to put the saddle clamps on. Research this as if you use them at all as it is important.

never saddle a dead horse..

BTW, My winch has a synthetic rope and no thimble..

It has not been an issue, but I would really prefer a thimble..
