Ok I bought a synth line from Rockstomper. It came with no directions. My question is do I have to spool it on under heavy load? Or can I just pull it taut by hand? Also I assume the line goes under the drum not over.

You can spool it on taut by hand but it may take up too much space on your drum so it touches the rails when fully spooled. But it WILL compress a whole lot once you put a load on it. So if you got the max to fit maybe do it under load. I did 125' of 3/8" syn line and it barely fit but now it has pulled a number of capacity pulls it looks like I could fit another 50' on there

...I'm in Ithaca now full time by the way

There are a few things that you should becarful about with any winch rope,

1 Make sure all weld spatter is groud off the drum and if the winch was used make sure that all of the impressions from the cable are gound off. these will ruin the rope

2 If you don't have a hawse style fairlead get one.
the rope can pinch inbetween the rollers of a roller fairlead
and destroy itself and the fairlead

3 When using the winch make sure you leave atleast half a drum of rope on it
the lug that attaches to the drum is weak it is hard to crimp a lug on to it

4 If it gets muddy wash it it a washing machine dirt inside it will kill it like climbing ropes.

I put my rope on hand tight and as Mike stated it just fit.

So Mike is the truck out here as well? I'm heading out that way for work in two weeks. If you're around I might have time for a beer.

...yeah, notice how I said "I'm" here...truck is sitting at Rick's shop while he goes to run the Rubicon this coming weekend and I could go to the Fall Gathering out here if I had a truck. Oh well, it is a beautiful time of year around here so I'm making do hiking and biking. Definitely hit me up when you are in the area, I need to meet the "locals".

Matt mentioned some really good tips.

I like to spool mine on kinda snug, more than I can do by hand. What works well is to find a parking lot or street that has a slight slope to it, park the truck at the bottom of the slope with the parking brake set just slightly to create some drag. Unspool the rope, put one layer on it hand-snug, then anchor the other end to something solid like a tree or lamp post (use a tree-saver strap!), or a tow hook on another vehicle. Use the winch motor to "pull" your truck towards the anchor point, it might take some experimenting to get the right drag on the e-brake.

Stop when you're about 4-5' away from the anchor, do the rest by hand, be VERY careful on the last bit so it doesn't yank your fingers into the hawse, it's easy to make that mistake and very costly (ouch!).

Wear gloves!

This reminds me, that I need to re-sleeve my rope before the FG.

+1. I just put synth rope on my Warn, and I did exactly what KLF recommends. I used a tree in my front yard, a slightly downward-sloping street, and some brake resistance. I pulled it in slowly, and guided the rope when it tried to get "off track."
But I only bought 80' of rope, so I didn't really have any capacity issues.

Edit: Woo Hoo - 1st post. I guess I just lost my title of "lurker only."

Ok thanks guys for the tips. I'm gonna clean all the weld splatter off the drum then mount the rope under load.
