I'm going for a very clean, hidden winch mounting. I'm thinking of mounting the control pack behind the bumper. See picture below. It would be on the outside of the frame rail, inside the bumper.

A couple of concerns that I wanted opinions on.

It will tend to get muddy, and wet back there. Muddier than on top of the bumper, but not as wet as on top. No mater where I mount it I plan on using some silicone to seal it up.

I'll be using an in cab winch control most of the time. I'll use the control pack for backup control, and for re-spooling the rope.

I thought about making some sort of enclosure back there to protect it.

Any thoughts?

I mounted my winch (on my Tacoma) behind the stock bumper and put the control pack under the hood. I extended the wires and ran the remote plug in to the grill and also wired up an in cab switch. Not sure what the engine bay on a 62 looks like but my solenoid pack is on the side of the airbox. This is the best picture I have but the remote is right beside the passenger headlight. It's a pretty clean install and keeps the winch out of the road spray and the solenoids high and dry. ....Steve

Did you leave the solonoids in the warn box? I could find room for them if I took them out.

My engine bay is already packed- 2 batteries ARB compressor and some other stuff.

If you look at the 80 series ROTW Slomo, he has his control pack mounted where you are asking about.

Greg, in my cruiser I'm going to put mine under the hood too. This way I can keep it out of the weather and away from prying hands. Mine is an older unsealed 8274 solenoid though.

I left mine in the box and also have a pretty packed compartment but managed to barely squeeze it in. I would think taking them out and mounting them seperately would be a big hassle and you've have to be very careful not to short them out. Wish I could offer you more but I'm not familiar with the 60's. ....Steve

OK, I'm going to look at it tonight with fresh eyes. If I still can't find a place in the engine bay, I'm going to mount it behind the bumper.

Thanks for yall's input.

The remote solenoid pack can literally be mounted anywhere it fits... of course there are drawback with longer cables. I wouldn't mount it any lower than the winch, water is the utmost killer of winches. While quality solenoids can work pretty flawlessly, even under water... I would do your best to get them up and high.

If you are going to use a remote switching setup (in cab, etc), then you could mount the thing tucked away somewhere under the hood. If you still want to be able to use your remote (good idea IMHO), then run an extension from the solenoid box to a conveinient location...
