Wilma's Buildup thread - FJ45LV

well I have been getting some steady time out on Wilma. alot of it has been ordering and organiing parts and and supplies that I didn't have or needed.
I knew building a completely new brake system would be a challenge, though I did not realize the physical building of it would be as easy as its been. and the hard part being getting all the correct parts. I have gotten doubles of some parts and some parts that I didn't even need.. I have bent up a new hard line that runs along the frame to the rear set up tried to attach it to the finished rear section and found the new braided flex line from the frame to the axle was 4" too short :( its been a bunch of stuff like that, along the road but its coming together now. I have leearned how to bend new brake lhard-line and add a flare to the end. I ordered my 2lb resistence inline peice and a proportioning valve for the rear setup and should have everything finally by early next week.will be nice to cross something so huge in the project off the to do list.
I will try to give an acurate account of what went into the set-up and where i got it. I'll start with the rdb setup

-rear chevy rotors and caliper brackets. " Poser" on Mud, nice stuff

-rear chevy calipers and braided flex lines, TSM nice stuff prolly should have gotten the lines from Classic tube but more on that later.

- T fitting and flex line from axle to frame. Classic tube made me the exact length I wanted and put a female 10mm end on one side and a female T fitting ont he other. very cool but I wish I had known the female T was possible because I tracked down axle T's from later model fj40's in that I thought they were an unobtainium new part. silly me.

-New hardline on frame from rear axle to front frame junction. I got 10mm fittings a flare tool and 25 feet of hard line from classic tube. i have since ordered another 25' of tube in that I want to use les braided flex line and more tube to keep the brakes fresher and solid.

- the junction on the frame that sits right below the firewall. I got this from a part out 78' fj40 rig and will be the only 'old' part used.

-the 2 hard lines from the junction to the MC will be made new but I bought some used ones from cruiser parts as guides. they are from a late 70's fj40 and while they would not hook up to my MC they do follow the path to the junction on the firewall and will be an excellent guide.

-the front brakes I will use the exsisting disks or a spare set of fj62 disks that I have if they will fit . I have not looked into it.

- there will be a short hard line off the frame junction forward to where I can drop the flex line straight down to the axle.

-a T to 2 flex lines that will got to the calipers.

- I am using the 4 runner early 90's v6 calipers that have the 4 big pistons

-I am using the late 70's firewal which I clear as mud document the installation of. inorder to use an early 70's brake booster

-on the rear hard line from the MC I am using a 2 lb resistence from willwood that I got from Summit Racing along with a Manual proportioning vlave that I also got from summit. the 2 lb resistence will keep the pressure in the line for the rdb and the proportioning valve will help me dial in the correct fore aft braking for how ever i have the lv loaded.

-and finally I am using a 93 4runner brake master in that it has the wider bore ( I checked last night it fits on my booster which is a relief) hopefully this willstop my lv.

I had to redo every line in that the new hard lines are a bit wider diameter and all the modern fittings are 10mm not 9mm so I could not simply bite off alittle I had to bite off the whole thing. also the stock brake system was set up for 4wdrums just having the disks in the front was prolly over load enought. and boy was the stock system convoluted.

got some time in on the lv this week end mostly dry fitting the pedals nd brake parts seeing what i am missing as far as nuts and bolts go and making a couple orders to $OR to get parts. nothing glamorous I did order the pads for the brake clutch and accelerator pedals but I did not have any of the cotter pins that hold the MC's to the pedal arms or the hardware to hold the ebrake cable to the pull. and it seems the PO sold the starter mounting bolts , or lost them:) when he sold the starter off my doner engine for crack. bunch of odds and ends of stuff like that.
I did get the ps hoses mounted the high pressure hose is a bit long might have to take it back to shorten it but could live with it as long as it clears everything. I did try and mount up the pitman arm and the terod and look to have some serious fitment issues and need some help.
my plan is to lift the lv atleast 4" if not a SOA but I want to get it on the road and inspected before that happens so I need the steering working now rather than later. I can't see how this drop pitman arm will not hit the relay rod as well as the suspension spring. I added some pictures to illutrate my issue.

- next I need to get the bolt that bolts the pitman arm onto the saginaw box. any suggestions where to get it??

body mounts???

I also need to find out what people have done for new body mounts. with the impedning arrival of the floors and thus finishing up the body work I will be wanting to reattach the body to the frame soon ish. fox seemed to think others have gooten 2 sets of fj40 body moutns ??? does that ring a bell???

ok I have been keeping it going at a steady pace on the old lv. last week I started the parking brake swap stage 3. I don't have a press so I had to send the new output shaft to NH via 'leaping deer' to 'KLF' both mud members and YT members. so now it needs to get in the hole in time for the floors to arrive.
this weekend I putzed around doing odds and ends of things bolting some stuff on and i finished sanding the roof and gave it its Jamming coat on the rain gutter area. my heart stopped when I peeled the tape off and I got a glimpse of how it is guna look. with the blue roof adjacent to the jammed sides. I am very please with my color combo. here are som pics of the roof painted

I have been doing some odds and ends of stuff. doing inventory of parts I have and don't have. ordered a catolog from JCwhitney and plan to match up what will work best for window felts and the rearhatch tailgate weather stripping. I have the pictures of what Matt used so that will help as well.
ColoCruiserJeff- thanks I hope the paint scheme looks as good as I think and plan it will :) I have made one change to the bumper. i have been makingnuts and bolts purchases from SOR, about 805 of the bolts are the right size :( I did find that my local True value has JGS in limited supply so I think I will go that route. Anyway one of the bolt packages I got from SOR was there bumper bolt kit, I did get that installed and it really finishes off the bumper nicely with the rouded tops. I will get pics this week end.
this saturday I have Leaping deer coming back with my output shaft all set to be reinstalled in the transfer case. which will be the last of the mechanicals that will get done before the floors plop in.
I have a family free week end next week end so i should be able to get some stuff done.

Watch out for those crack smokin PO's. I hear that one in particular has a REALLY bad :smokin: habit. :D

For the pitman nut: your local Chevy dealer, parts store or u-pull-it yard should have one of those.

thanks Nick it is getting there.
this past weekend leaping deer and his dad came down and we got the transfercaase back together with the parking brake drum on the rear i will take pics later. I also messed around with the steering. I got the new straight steering arm but it is way to long and with my crossmember bracket setup I need to have some drop to it or it won't clear the frame cleanly. So it looks like i will have to do the lift sooner than I had planned. which is probable good anyway. i emailed Alcan and got my quote for a 4" lift all the way around. I decided to go with the SUA lift vs the SOA in that I would not be able to fit a SOA-ed rig in my garage. and this will surely be a garage queen in my harsh climated area.
anyway I hope to order those later this week ust have to figure out how to shipp them in past the control tower:princess:
I also spent alot of time on the phone with JCwhitney figuring out the last of my weather stripping and window felts. I will post the part numbers and such hear and on the window felt thread once I get them in and make sure they fit correctly. but I do recommend ordering the catolog in that it has a ton of pictures while the web site does not.

Don't worry about that you can just ship them to my house and I can bring them down next time I'm in the area.

On a different topic FJ45lv springs will fit on an FJ45pb right? :D
 
ha fortunately only an lv or swb pu you have the same frame as a troopy.
did not mention in my previous post half of our mornign was spent trying to get a broken bolt out of the transfer case. we ended up drilling it out and tapping it but Jason had to leave before we got to get a bolt back in there. so i was able to get the bolt in there and tightened to the correct torque specs. boy that was a pain in the a$$.
 
But all joking aside if you ever need anything shipped over let me know.

As for that bolt, I'm glad that everything bolted up back together properly. I was worried that we may have been a little off when we drilled it.
 
been workin on little things here and there. some of the engine and mechanical stuff but one of my bigger projects lately was getting the window felts and putting a door together. I got the hard C channel 1/2" x1/2" x6' strips of window felts from JC whiney. they weren't wuite what I was expecting in that the backing is metal not pastic which made doing the rounded corners kind of messy but I gave it a try and will take it apsrt again to fill in the gaps I cut out of the tin to form it into the curved corners of the topp hoops of the doors.
anyway here are some pics of the door put together.
expecting some engine parts this week and then I am at some what of a stand still until I get the floors in and the suspension. shich both should be on there way :)

I could never find the part number for what Matt used. I even revived a thread on window felts but no one seemed to have it no worries really I just ordered a catolog from JCWhitney and did some measuring and figured out what would work. the only surprise was that the support was solid for the channel and not flexible which at first bummed me out buti actually really like how easy the windows glide and the rigidness that the hard channel provides. if I can just fill in the gaps cleanly that I had to cut out with my cutoff wheel then I will be much more than happy
