I’m planning on doing this with you on the 6th.

If you want to convoy over, meet at the Divide Philips 66 at 6:45 am. We leave as soon as we account for the people that signed up (NLT 7:15). Formal meetup is in Johnson Village at the Gunsmoke parking lot at 8:30 am. I plan to meet at the Divide Philips 66.

Bring a GMRS radio (channel 15), lunch, and all of the needed recovery and safety gear.

I was able to purchase an OHV permit/sticker and print the TAN (temporary authorization number). The website kinds sucks, so there's a non-zero chance I bought the wrong thing but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either sticker, the one for plated vehicles and the one for OHV‘s, will work for our plated vehicles. I discussed this with CPW last year. I went to purchase one for my plated vehicle and they did not even know what that was. They told me that the other one would work and I told him I specifically wanted one for a plated vehicle and then they found that one and sold it to me. Go figure.

This trail ride was spectacular due to total immersion in the heart of Colorado’s high country and the difficulty of the trails. We had five rigs, including a 60, an 80, a 100, a GX470, and one of our regular Jeep friends. We had a 16 hour day and included three passes and the Alpine Tunnel national historic site.

We started on Williams Pass which was muddy and rocky and required lots of attention to find the right lines. After completing Williams, we drove the Alpine Tunnel road along the cliffs and had lunch, followed by a hike to see the old townsite, the locomotive turntable, and the blocked and caved-in entrance to the tunnel. Lots of good stuff to see here.

We then drove to the Hancock Pass and Tomichi Pass junction where Tim and Dave split off and drove to the top of Tomichi Pass. The others of us drove a little ways up Hancock to a spectacular viewpoint for a high altitude coffee break.

We drove over and down the east side of Hancock Pass to the ghost town of Hancock and then to Saint Elmo where we aired up. Hancock Pass, like Williams Pass, has lots of rocky challenges that require a focused driving effort.

Here’s my favorite picture of the day.
