This is the scheduled September trail ride to go to Crested Butte area. Meet at the Divide Philips 66 at 6:45 am. We leave as soon as we account for the people that signed up (7:15). Next meetup is in Johnson village at Gunsmoke at 8:30. If you are going for the day it will be a long one (about 4 hours one way). When we made the annual schedule the discussion was to go out on Saturday camp that night and return on Sunday.
Remember to bring a GMRS radio (we use channel 5-0), recovery gear, lunch.
The date on the post should be 9/21/24. Since no one has signed up for the trail ride to Crested Butte, the people at the monthly meeting decided to change the destination to be Mosquito Pass. The return will be by way of Weston Pass. Meet at the Divide Philips 66 at 7:45 am. We leave as soon as we account for the people that signed up (8:15). Next meetup is in Hartsel at 9:00.
Remember to bring a GMRS radio (we use channel 5-0), recovery gear, lunch.
But seriously, I want it all checked. I've had shocks, springs, tie rods, steering arms all disconnected or replaced, and on the last highway drive, it gave me a death wobble. It has caster bushings from the PO.
There was some wire that happened to come out of one of the pickup coils in the distributor. Don't know why it decided to do it on that day. With all of the wire wrapped around the reluctor it was difficult to determine when to fire a spark from the igniter. Time for a new distributor.
We had a pretty interesting weekend. It got off to a late start, but it did get started. It was just Tracy and my vehicles on this one. Tracy was performing update tasks for one of the off road websites. It just meant that we had a few stops at intersections to clarify directions with pictures and notes. My first stop was at the North London mine site. A representative was on site and gave a tour of the mine office/owners cabin that was built in 1883. It was nicely maintained/restored with still preserving the history of the building. The main mill building next door was built in 1893 and is in disrepair. The rep told me that a $200K grant was received that will go for restoring the main mill building.
The fall colors were just starting and we got to drive through some brilliant areas with Aspen trees glowing.
We continued on up the trail and found it to be rocky but wide and pretty well maintained. There were no washouts or really bad parts of the road, there were some areas that you had to pick your line to stay un-scraped. On the upper parts of the trail we saw a stock Tacoma and a couple of stock jeeps. About a mile from the pass we saw the clouds start rolling over the peaks and it started to snow. When we went through the pass it was a whiteout and the snow was flying horizontal pushed by a 70 Mph wind. We found the road down to Leadville and the snow stopped after we were 1000 feet below the pass. We continued down to and through Leadville and directly to the turnoff to Weston pass. The road is pretty nice and can be traveled by most vehicles with a bit of clearance. There were more pretty views and a nice drive back to the pavement. We did see a ranch that had 3 white bison.
