Will I hate my V8 conversion keeping the 4 speed?

If you could find a toyota with a granny low that'd be nice...might even work with your adapter (H41?)

The H41 is identical to the H42 in all exterior dimensions and sizes. Any adaptor that fits to the H42 will also work on the H41. I like the H41 I have in the FJ55 as it seems to be better suited to the power band of the diesel than the H42 I had before.

What about strenght...is the 4speed beefy enough to stand up to the V8?

Unquestionably. I daily drove, plowed snow, wheeled and generally abused one like only an immature, hormonal-crazed teenager could from 82-92. Now the aluminum transfercases, well, that's a different story altogether.

Best thing I have found about the Orion is that it has made a bunch of these stock TC housings readily available and very inexpensive. I have stashed away two and have less than $50 in both including the ride to me. I hope to never need them.

I've got the Toyota 4 speed and 33 inch tires behind my 3FE and it just great. Mostly around town, and on the highway once in a while. I've been thinking about a H55, but I just don''t think it's going to be worth the cost.

If you looking for a used 4 speed, there are several floating around austin and dallas - shoot me a pm. -Mark

You guys aren't helping my case any. Ditch the 4 spd. it's old, tired and wants a new home.....

I will not drive the 40 on the highway at all. Just putting around town for fun and hunting out of it some. Mostly just a sunny day vehicle for short jaunts,

HA!:lol: You say that now, you just wait...once you get the FJ40 on the road, your going to drive it as much as you can.. So how is it going, any major progress??

I seem to have spied an H55 today that liked quite a bit! Further, what's this I hear about you scoring one from AU for a grand?!!!!

4speed

keep it I put 350 in and i'm riding 38"s swampers love it don't drive it on highway but it defenitly holds it's own around town and on the trails.

Well, this is all good news to me. I just did a sbc swap, backed it with a sm465 (that I rebuilt),a nos marlin crawler box,and the older toy tc.I was told to install a tc saver or I'd break the tc in half? I was hoping that this would be a good combo with 37"s -38"s.Plenty of top end with plenty of lowend also?
nspctr1,you allready have a sbc why not go sm465 there inexpensive and they make adaptors for everything?

my first 75,40 had a 350 in it with the stock 4speed i liked it alot , my 71 i just put in a 4.3v6 with a sm420 its a really good combo , the sm465 shifts better but i wanted the low gear:hhmm:

I agree with cruiser_guy, synchronized 33% lower fist gear and is a direct bolt in. For an easy upgrade get the 1980 or later , mated to the split case.
The shifter is about 3"~4" back on the top cover making the V-8 swap easier
( clears the heater better ). The split case is considerably stronger.

i made a case saver for the t case on mine. one thing i did is counter sink the plate. for the bolt in the plate nearest the shifter as the extra higth interfered with the hi,lo linkage. the sm420 trannys are older an getting harder to find. the sm465 are probibly more avalible . in any case both these trannys drive like three speeds on road but off road the granny gear is awsome:cool:

I have yet to get this H55 from AU. Iam in line for one, but don't actually have it, and Iam not sure it's even going to happen. :frown:
