Hey guys, I just bought a '92 fj80 (love it!). I have two FJ60 (parts trucks). Will the knuckles and hubs on the fj60 swith over to the FJ80 so that I can have part time 4wd. I'm very green to the 80 series cruisers, so I could use your help. The reason I want to swith is I am getting a whine from the front end when it is at hwy speed. Only whines when under a load. I jacked the front end up, and there is some play in the front axl. I don't know, maybe spyder gears. Anyway, the truck only have 144K miles so I would like to get by with only running the 4wd when needed. I know I can purchase an AVM kit to do this same thing, but I'm trying to come up with a different solution. I own two really great FJ60 cruisers, and a not so great FJ40 cruiser. I've put off getting into the FJ80, but I must say, I love it! Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks!

You don't need to swap knuckes anyway, you just need to ditch the drive flange (might not be the right word- I'm not much of a mechanic) and add manual hubs, then find a way to disconnect the driveshaft from the output of the TC. (drop the shaft is the easiest/ cheapest option). You'll have to lock your center differential though.

aisin hubs

So the aisin hubs off of my parts FJ60 will work on my FJ80?

Then I just disconnect the front driveshaft and engage the CDL and voila! I have 2wd. That's pretty cool. I'll search the threads to try to find out if other people are using the hubs off of an FJ60.

You guys are the best. Thanks!

That's one way to get one wheel drive. Unless you have something other than a floater in the rear.

Should be fine.

Enjoy.

What does a full floater have to do with it?

Should behave just like all of the pre-80 series rigs in your sig., unless you've modified them...

oops, might not be full or semi, can be factory. My bad. I'm learned. It will behave no differently than the 40 I worked on today. Still, it's going to spin the wheel that turns most freely.

You missed the drive shaft part?

No...

As the OP realizes, removing the front DS (and adding part time hubs) is the only way (other than Slee's part time kit) to keep the front end bits from moving on an 80 series. So he'll be rear wheel drive, just like any part time 4wd vehicle that's in 2hi.

But yes, of course he'll need to put the DS back in any time he wants 4wd or AWD.

Cheers,

Huhhhh

Why the F#$@#% would you want a 2wd 80 series landcruiser?????

So, even with the part time kit, the front driveshaft & front diff are always turning (if you leave it bolted in)?

Anybody ever swap in a transfercase from a 62 into the earlier 80s, since it has the same engine/transmission?

NO!!! :bang:

sicksixty is trying to get away *without* buying the part time kit (I.e., t-case modification). Thus he needs to drop the front DS to keep the front end stuff from turning.

:meh:

I know I wouldn't. I *love* the full time AWD now that I'm used to it. Seems to be a common occurrence in 80's noobs to think of it as a bad thing though...

Also, note that in this thread the reason is as a band-aid fix for a front end whine.

fj60

Can someone explain to me how the slee part time 4wd kit works? The AVM kit, whatever it is? I live in New Orleans, LA and only 4wheel on the weekends that I can. Mostly ride the powerlines. Now my FJ60 can wheel with the best of them. I just would like the option of making my 80 2wd. I'm just curious what the Slee kit offers that allows the front DS not to turn. Can someone explain how it works?

Basically turns an 80 t-case into a 60 t-case. Keep in mind you will LOSE the center differential. You'll only have rear wheel drive or locked center 4wd (like your 60). No open center all wheel drive.

Definitely a trade off...

Thanks, Curtis!!

I'm just curious, will a FJ60 t-case work in my FJ80. I have plenty of FJ60 parts.

Most likely not as the 80 series transfer case has speed sensors and other electronics fitted that you would have to work around so that the trans computer would still be a happy unit. Possibly very early 80s could use a 60 transfer case if it fitted if they had the early mechanical Auto. (not the A442)

Cheers
