I came across a rolled 2010 FJC in the local wrecking yard. It starts and runs fine from what I can tell. Needs a complete body of course. Nothing has been pulled off the cruiser. It has 63K miles on the drivetrain. Price is extremely fair at 3500.00.

SO, I have a deal pending on a '87 FJ60 Tan/Beige complete body.

Wheel base of the FJ60 is 107.5"/ width 70.9"
Wheel base of the FJC is 105.9"/ width 75"

I can do all the fabrication for the body swap and anything else in that realm. Just wondering what are some things that could get me into trouble here... I'm not 100% sure I want to try and tackle a project like this, but I could see me pulling the trigger here..

M, If I attempt this, I will be keeping the gasser that's in the FJC currently. However, a Yota diesel would be awesome.

I ran across a FJC in Louisiana that had a Hino custom converted in it with a six speed. It was SWEET and around $65000.00 the guy said. A company out of San Antonio, TX did the work.

Was the company called dieseltoys by any chance? I was thinking about paying them to put a 1hd-t into mine. Then reality hit me

Edit: was this the fj cruiser you saw?

Research CAN-BUS.

In short you're going to need to keep a bunch of systems not related to the engine to keep the ECU happy.

Or find a tuner who can delete them or turn em off

If you start deleting things the engine wont run correctly and might not pass inspection.

Wyoming is looking more and more attractive everyday. I had to jump through hoops last year because I live in a county that did emissions.

I meant unneeded stuff like alarm system, cruise, doors windows, seatbelts etc, make the drivetrain a standalone system in other words

Thats the difficulty with canbus. The ecu is expecting signals from the airbag system, abs, evap, etc. every 1gr swap I've seen needed a stand.alone ecu and custom Intake, and custom tuning.

I am not sure why you would do this other than it would be fun and different.

Having had a very nice FJ60, I think there are much better ways to make an FJ60 different and super nice.

Wheel base is not the only concern. I would look long and hard at width of the two frames. Height of engine & trans in the chassis, will it clear the FJ60 trans tunnel? Will you have to body lift it? Is the engine bay big and long enough? Would you leave it IFS? Are body mounts, custom that you make, going to be a big problem? I am not familiar with the FJC frame but I would imagine it is a lot different than the FJ60. The nice thing about swapping an FJ60 onto an 80 chassis is the frame are not all that different, biggest drama to overcome is the wheelbase and shortening the frame. Which has been done and documented right here. Plus hot rod guys also do it all the time (shorten/lengthen a frame) and their methods are tried and true.

It is certainly do-able, I just don't see why you would. Building custom suspension for the FJ60 will be easier. Or just dial in the old FJ60 leaves to the max. My old FJ60 once all dialed in easily rode as good as my 80-series. In fact it was the best leaf spring truck I have ever owned or riden in. I kept it SuA and it flexed better than most SoA trucks. Like I say it cornered and handled as good as an 80-series. Off-road it was a Cadillac. You just have to be willing to do more than bolt on aftermarket junk. Or go with the tried and true, plop an FJ60 body on an FJ80 chassis.

If you are just after the newer engine, trans, t-case and possibly axles, it seems way easier to put all that in the FJ60 chassis. An FJ60 has a really stout chassis, it does have a few problem areas but they are easily dealt with.

Not knocking your idea, I am just :hmm:

Cheers

All good points. It is just something to do to keep me busy and out of trouble.. and I like a good challenge.

I like the idea of the newer FJC components with the retro look of the 60. Yes all FJC suspension and drivetrain will stay if I attempt this. I have both a 80 and a FJC now as well.. I like the FJC offroad much better than the 80, not because its newer, it just fits me better. Everyone is different, :meh:

Thanks for the input.

Moving the rear axle forward even 2" would be troublesome and limiting on tire size. Why not a 73 or 75? You'd get some weight savings and could run 33s or 35s without moving the axles. Toss on a long travel kit and it'd be a sweet all around wheeler.

went to look at the fjc and it had been sold. So, this idea is on standby.... But thanks for all the feedback, good comments posted up.

what!!!! This is an outrage!!!
