Hey everyone, I haven't posted in a while because my cruiser has been doing what a cruiser does. Driving and driving with out any problems what-so-ever until....... the dreaded NOISE!!!!!! OK recently I have been noticing a clunking sound when I go over bumps like there's something in the back that's bouncing around (it sounds metalic). Today it was worse and when I accelerate hard I hear a growling noise and can feel feel a clunk under the drivers floorboard. It happened consistantly so I know somethings not right. If I drive it normally and non-agressively it doesn't happen. I have been underneath and can't see anything. Any ideas? Thanks! BC.

Suspension stuff....., exhaust...., shielding for the cats...., maybe a motor mount (although I don't think the sound would come from the back and under your foot well).

Climb under the truck and have a good session of prodding things to see what might be loose. If it only happens when you are hard on the gas, that would point to something flexing with engine torque (loose exhaust or a motor mount that has given out).

Do a good grease job on the universal joints; check lub levels. U joints do wear out!

...

sounds like the driver's side motor mount to me...............

the clunk could be something(exhaust?) hitting the floor

the 'grinding' could be the fan hitting the shroud.............

no guarantees tho........check it out

I just went back and looked.....62..............easy test..........

open the hood, prop it up, start the engine, put it in drive, left foot brake, right foot gas

throttle up a little bit

and if you can see the engine thru the windshield if the mount's broken it'll lift up on the driver's side

if you can't see the engine have someone else do it............

does the shifter move at all under hard throttle? might help to see if a mount / crossmember is bad.

all my clunks like that came from my exhaust. nothing a little bailing wire couldn't fix if that's the case...

Here's an update. I just drove around for a more concentrated listen. It is definately under the drivers floorboard and sounds like tin cans clanking with a sort or growl thrown in. It only does it for a second then it goes away but it is consistant in that it happens everytime I hit the accelerator hard or go over a big bump. I'm going to run her and look under the hood next. Thanks to all who have repiied so far!

Bang on your cats with a rubber mallet. Mine was doing the same kinda noise and it made zore sense to me. What it was the honeycomb inards of the converter and came loose and would rattle, cluck and bang depending on what theloose stuff was doing in the inside of the converter case.

Another vote for u-joints.....
grab that driveshaft and pull side to side ,check to see if theres any play at the joints, they wear out over time. easy fix...sorta cheep too!

x2 on the cat converter. I remember reading another thread about the same noise. it was a cat that went bad...

Ok, stopped by my long time friend and mechanic. I described the sound and symptoms. He said cat converter right away. It's my DD so I need her back right away. I'm gonna drop it off. The last thing he said to me as I was walking away was "they ain't cheap". I'm not worried about the labor but does anyone have a ballpark on the part?

In the meantime I'm gonna hope that none of the innards clog the exhaust. The last thing he said to me as I was walking away was "they ain't cheap". Does Florida do smog tests? If not, I would just remove them, or have the meat and potatoes gutted out of them and reinstall them.

Totally depends on what cat you go with. The last new one I bought I paid $100 for a magnaflow cat. I have heard of others costly several times more then that.

x2 on not using the cat if you don't need it for smog. you should notice a power increase without it. I have one you could buy rom an fj60 in good shape, but i don't know what they are worth. I am in seattle, and you would have to cover shipping... let me know what you think.

oh yeah, and good luck!

FJ60 cat won't work. 62s have two of them.

Heres a direct fit. I have used them for the FJ60 before. 1988 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Discount Catalytic Converters or get universal fit from CSK for about half the cost. Just have to have someone that can weld them in (make sure they keep the flanges and don't just weld the front pipe to the y pipe).
