Why have an inner seal on FF?

Just a quick update. It has been 55,366 miles and seven years since I replaced the rear axle bearings and left out the inner seals on my FF axle. I did not pack the bearings with grease but have been totally dependent on the differential lube to lubricate the bearings. To date, no lube leaks and the axle bearings appear to be doing fine. I just did a visual check and I didn't check the preload as that would have required pulling the axle shaft.

Thanks for circling back on this. Your results are what I expected would happen.

FWIW about 15 years ago MISF & I built a utility trailer out of a CUCV bed, an old square spline Dana 60, and an IH pick-up frame. The single highest cost items in the whole build were the Timken wheel bearings and the CR wheel bearing seals. We cut the spindles off the D60 housing and inserted them into a slightly larger, full width tube left over from a demo derby car. I added fill and drain plugs to the tube. Filled to level with the bottom of the fill bung it holds just about 3.5 gallons of gear lube. I mention this because these are Dana 60 wheel hubs & spindles - no inner seal was ever available or used. The wheel bearings run in an oil bath. Initially the hub seals did weep. After the 1600 mile round trip to Central OR and back they quit weeping and have been dry ever since. Since then it has been to Baja and towed up Camp Rock Road in Johnson Valley at nearly 100 miles/hr (not by me) and it sits for months at a time. No problems with the wheel bearings, ever.
